Book Description
As we increase utilization of the ISS as a National Laboratory, now is the time for investigators to propose ways to use both existing and new research and to make discoveries unveiling new knowledge about nature that could not be defined using traditional approaches on Earth.NASAs Physical Sciences Research Program conducts fundamental and applied physical sciences research, with the objective of enabling exploration and pioneering scientific discovery. NASAs experiments in the various disciplines of physical science reveal how physical systems respond to the near absence of gravity. They also reveal how other phenomena that have a small influence on physical systems in Earth's gravity can dominate system behavior in space. Not only are we using the ISS to perform investigations, we are also taking the results from these investigations and making them available to researchers via open data. The PSI system (https: //psi.nasa.gov) allows researchers to access the data from physical sciences investigations, most of which have been performed on the ISS

Book Description
Machine learning is an exciting topic with a myriad of applications. However, most textbooks are targeted towards computer science students. This, however, creates a complication for scientists across the physical sciences that also want to understand the main concepts of machine learning and look ahead to applica- tions and advancements in their fields. This textbook bridges this gap, providing an introduction to the mathematical foundations for the main algorithms used in machine learning for those from the physical sciences, without a formal background in computer science. It demon- strates how machine learning can be used to solve problems in physics and engineering, targeting senior undergraduate and graduate students in physics and electrical engineering, alongside advanced researchers. Key Features: Includes detailed algorithms Supplemented by codes in Julia: a high-performing language and one that is easy to read for those in the natural sciences All algorithms are presented with a good mathematical background

Book Description
The name of the new synthetic discipline that integrates physics and information theory is the "Physical Informatics (FI). FI is information background of physics: informatics laws have general, universal character, operate in all possible universes with different physical laws. Informatics laws precede and restricted physical laws. Along with matter and energy the Universe contains, includes information. Information is an integral part of the Universe. Each physical system along with physical characteristics has information characteristics. Information is inseparably linked with matter and energy. Information is physical heterogeneity. The information characteristics of heterogeneity: Shannon's information entropy, information divergence, joint entropy, mutual information. FI is science of information in physical, chemical and living systems. The submitted works include the foundations of FI. Informatics and physical laws together will allow opening all secrets of nature. The book is devoted for professionals in the field of informatics, physics, as well as for students, post-graduate students, which are interested in the bases and new ideas of natural sciences.

Book Description
More than four decades have passed since a human first set foot on the Moon. Great strides have been made in our understanding of what is required to support an enduring human presence in space, as evidenced by progressively more advanced orbiting human outposts, culminating in the current International Space Station (ISS). However, of the more than 500 humans who have so far ventured into space, most have gone only as far as near-Earth orbit, and none have traveled beyond the orbit of the Moon. Achieving humans' further progress into the solar system had proved far more difficult than imagined in the heady days of the Apollo missions, but the potential rewards remain substantial. During its more than 50-year history, NASA's success in human space exploration has depended on the agency's ability to effectively address a wide range of biomedical, engineering, physical science, and related obstacles-an achievement made possible by NASA's strong and productive commitments to life and physical sciences research for human space exploration, and by its use of human space exploration infrastructures for scientific discovery. The Committee for the Decadal Survey of Biological and Physical Sciences acknowledges the many achievements of NASA, which are all the more remarkable given budgetary challenges and changing directions within the agency. In the past decade, however, a consequence of those challenges has been a life and physical sciences research program that was dramatically reduced in both scale and scope, with the result that the agency is poorly positioned to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities offered by the now fully equipped and staffed ISS laboratory, or to effectively pursue the scientific research needed to support the development of advanced human exploration capabilities. Although its review has left it deeply concerned about the current state of NASA's life and physical sciences research, the Committee for the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space is nevertheless convinced that a focused science and engineering program can achieve successes that will bring the space community, the U.S. public, and policymakers to an understanding that we are ready for the next significant phase of human space exploration. The goal of this report is to lay out steps and develop a forward-looking portfolio of research that will provide the basis for recapturing the excitement and value of human spaceflight-thereby enabling the U.S. space program to deliver on new exploration initiatives that serve the nation, excite the public, and place the United States again at the forefront of space exploration for the global good.

Book Description
This revised edition covers all aspects of public health informatics and discusses the creation and management of an information technology infrastructure that is essential in linking state and local organizations in their efforts to gather data for the surveillance and prevention. Public health officials will have to understand basic principles of information resource management in order to make the appropriate technology choices that will guide the future of their organizations. Public health continues to be at the forefront of modern medicine, given the importance of implementing a population-based health approach and to addressing chronic health conditions. This book provides informatics principles and examples of practice in a public health context. In doing so, it clarifies the ways in which newer information technologies will improve individual and community health status. This book's primary purpose is to consolidate key information and promote a strategic approach to information systems and development, making it a resource for use by faculty and students of public health, as well as the practicing public health professional. Chapter highlights include: The Governmental and Legislative Context of Informatics; Assessing the Value of Information Systems; Ethics, Information Technology, and Public Health; and Privacy, Confidentiality, and Security. Review questions are featured at the end of every chapter. Aside from its use for public health professionals, the book will be used by schools of public health, clinical and public health nurses and students, schools of social work, allied health, and environmental sciences.

Book Description
Despite a strong commitment to delivering quality health care, persistent problems involving medical errors and ineffective treatment continue to plague the industry. Many of these problems are the consequence of poor information and technology (IT) capabilities, and most importantly, the lack cognitive IT support. Clinicians spend a great deal of time sifting through large amounts of raw data, when, ideally, IT systems would place raw data into context with current medical knowledge to provide clinicians with computer models that depict the health status of the patient. Computational Technology for Effective Health Care advocates re-balancing the portfolio of investments in health care IT to place a greater emphasis on providing cognitive support for health care providers, patients, and family caregivers; observing proven principles for success in designing and implementing IT; and accelerating research related to health care in the computer and social sciences and in health/biomedical informatics. Health care professionals, patient safety advocates, as well as IT specialists and engineers, will find this book a useful tool in preparation for crossing the health care IT chasm.
