Book Description
Identify compliance methods (mandatory vs. volunteer) that offer the best participation performance for the over-all success of the fitness program. A survey was conducted of sixty (60) fire departments within the State of Kansas. The purpose of the research was to evaluate the extent of fire service involvement in physical fitness programs or their lack thereof. Through the literature review it was evident that fire departments and emergency care providers need to define their objectives in mandating physical fitness programs. Nearly 80 percent of the respondents stated their department supplied equipment and facilities for a physical fitness program. These figures would indicate that 3 out of 4 departments recognize the need for physically fit members.

Book Description
With the specific requirement of physical fitness testing removed from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001-1 standard and the general requirement added to the NFPA 1500 standard, many fire chiefs, firefighters and administrators are unsure what type physical fitness assessment to use. As a result of this, many fire chiefs have either not started a physical fitness assessment program or they are thinking about changing their present assessment program. The lack of guidance and information available on Physical Performance Assessments (PPA) and Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA) has made the problem of determining which assessment needs to be implemented very difficult.

Book Description
ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines, Fourth Edition, presents the current standards and guidelines that help health and fitness establishments provide high-quality service and program offerings in a safe environment. This text is based in large part on both the work that has begun through the NSF international initiative to develop industry standards to serve as the foundation for a voluntary health and fitness facility certification process and the third edition of ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines. The ACSM’s team of experts in academic, medical, and health and fitness fields have put together an authoritative guide for facility operators and owners. By detailing these standards and guidelines and providing supplemental materials, ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standards andGuidelines provides a blueprint for health and fitness facilities to use in elevating the standard of care they provide their members and users as well as enhance their exercise experience. The fourth edition includes new standards and guidelines for pre-activity screening, orientation, education, and supervision; risk management and emergency procedures; professional staff and independent contractors; facility design and construction; facility equipment; operational practices; and signage. This edition includes these updates: •Standards and guidelines aligned with the current version of the pending NSF international health and fitness facility standards •New guidelines addressing individuals with special needs •New standards and guidelines regarding automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for both staffed and unstaffed facilities •Revised standards and guidelines to reflect changing directions and business models within the industry, including 24/7 fitness facilities, medically integrated facilities, and demographic-specific facilities •New standards and guidelines to better equip facilities that are dealing with youth to ensure the proper care of this segment of the clientele With improved organization, new visual features, and additional appendixes, the fourth edition offers a comprehensive and easy-to-use reference of health and fitness facility standards and guidelines. Readers can readily apply the information and save time and expense using over 30 templates found within the appendixes, including questionnaires, informed consent forms, and evaluation forms. Appendixes also contain more than 30 supplements, such as sample preventive maintenance schedules, checklists, and court and facility dimensions. Included in appendix A is Blueprint for Excellence, which allows readers to search efficiently for specific information regarding the standards and guidelines within the book. Health and fitness facilities provide opportunities for individuals to become and remain physically active. As the use of exercise for health care prevention and prescription continues to gain momentum, health and fitness facilities and clubs will emerge as an integral part of the health care system. The fourth edition of ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standardsand Guidelines will assist health and fitness facility managers, owners, and staff in keeping to a standard of operation, client care, and service that will assist members and users in caring for their health through safe and appropriate exercise experiences.

Book Description
Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition With Online Video, provides a comprehensive approach to physical fitness appraisal and exercise prescription. The text bridges the gap between research and practice and synthesizes concepts and theories from exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology, and nutrition to provide a clearly defined approach to physical fitness testing and the design of individualized exercise programs. The accompanying online videos enhance the learning experience and teach the techniques necessary for conducting fitness testing and program design. More than 40 clips featuring common exercise assessments will help users learn essentials of fitness testing, such as calibration of blood pressure cuffs, functional movement assessment, and push-up and pull-up testing. Unlike introductory texts, which typically focus on field testing for evaluating physical fitness, this text includes both field and laboratory assessment techniques. Readers will find the latest information on maximal and submaximal graded exercise testing in healthy populations, muscular fitness testing protocols and norms for children and adults, and field tests and norms for evaluating cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, flexibility, and balance. The seventh edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription reflects current guidelines and recommendations, including new physical activity recommendations from the U.S. government, American Heart Association, and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), as well as the latest ACSM guidelines for medical exam and exercise testing requirements before beginning exercise programs. Additional updates to the seventh edition include the following: • New research substantiating the link between physical activity and disease risk • Expanded information on prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, and overweight and obesity, including updated statistics on the global prevalence of obesity • New dietary guidelines for Americans, including information on MyPlate • Inclusion of SCORE system to estimate 10-year risk of fatal cardiac event due to atherosclerosis • Expanded information on the use of technology to monitor physical activity • Updated information on the use of exergaming and social networking to promote physical activity and exercise • Additional OMNI pictorial scales for ratings of perceived exertion during exercise • Latest ACSM FITT-VP principle for designing aerobic exercise programs • Whole-body vibration as an adjunct to resistance training and flexibility training Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition, is organized around physical fitness components, providing information on assessment followed by guidelines for designing exercise programs to improve each fitness component. The text begins with an overview of physical activity, health, and chronic disease, followed by discussion of preliminary health screening and risk classification, including the principles of fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and exercise program design. The remainder of the text provides in-depth coverage of assessment and exercise prescription for each of five physical fitness components: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular fitness (strength, endurance, and power), body composition, flexibility, and balance. In each chapter, key questions help readers focus on essential information. Key points, review questions, and key terms reinforce concepts and summarize chapter content. An instructor guide, test package, chapter quizzes, and presentation package plus image bank provide tools for lecture preparation, creative content delivery, and class assessment. New to the seventh edition are online video clips for both students and instructors to further aid comprehension of the text and provide an additional tool for classroom demonstration. By integrating the latest research, recommendations, and information into guidelines for application, Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Seventh Edition, bridges the gap between research and practice for fitness professionals. Its unique scope, depth of coverage, and clearly outlined approach make it a valuable resource for students and exercise science professionals who want to increase their knowledge, skill, and competence in assessing clients’ fitness and designing individualized exercise programs.
