Filaments from six to twelve inches long, or more, as thick as horsehair, cylindrical, equal, loosely tufted, generally so rigid as to bristle and stand out, one from another, when removed from the water; occasionally flaccid, fiexuous, much branched. Branches rather distantly placed, long, irregu larly subdivided in a manner between alternate and dichotomous, sometimes repeatedly, sometimes but slightly branched, the lesser divisions either long, simple, and quite naked, or hearing towards their extremities a few simple secund ramuli. Joints tolerably uniform in all parts of the frond, twice, thrice or four times as long as broad. Colour, when young, a full and rather dark, glossy green, afterwards paler and more yellowish. The first is, having taken a View of the whole subject, to adopt a Systematic Order; to commence with the first genus of the arrangement, to go re gularly through the species, then those of the next and following genera, and so on to the conclusion of the work. Thus the se veral tribes would follow in correct order; the first plates would represent the highest or the lowest type of organization, as either was selected as a starting point, and those that followed would exhibit a regular gradation Of affinity to the Opposite end of the series. This is the course which, were the work to issue as a whole from the press, one would naturally follow; but in an ex tensive periodical work which it will take five years to complete.
