Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. This work was undertaken under a joint fire science project S2Assessing the need, costs, and potential benefits of prescribed fire and mechanical treatments to reduce fire hazard. S3 This paper compares the future mix of timber projects under two treatment scenarios for New Mexico. We developed and demonstrated an analytical method that uses readily available tools to evaluate pre- and posttreatment stand conditions; size, species, and volume of merchantable wood removed during thinnings; size and volume of submerchantable wood cut during treatments; and financial returns of prescriptions that are applied repeatedly over a 90-year period.

Thirty prescribed burns were attempted in pinyon-juniper woodlands from fall 1974 to fall 1976. These attempts were made out of fire season, during varied atmospheric conditions, and in several pinyon-juniper communities. An analysis of the successful burns provided us with a method for predicting burning success from windspeed, air temperature, and vegetation cover. An igniting technique is also discussed.

Pre- and post-treatment seed-bank characteristics of woody species were compared after two prescribed fires in a mesic mixed-oak forest in the central Appalachians. Nineteen woody species were identified from soil samples. Mean species richness declined but evenness did not after prescribed burning. The seed bank was dominated by black birch, yellow-poplar, blackberry, grapevine and Hercules club before burning. Following burning, the median density of seed bank propagules declined by 45 percent. Black birch, yellow-poplar, and grapevine declined by 69, 56, and 40 percent, respectively. The results illustrate the importance of the seed bank as a robust source of non-oak regeneration in mixed-oak forests and of the potential effect of fire altering it.

We show photographs of different burned and unburned sites to help compare fire occurrence in similar stands.
