Book Description
Behavioral toxicology is a young discipline in the United States; so young, in fact, that this is one of its first books. Behavioral questions are bound to play a major role in future scientific work and governmental decisions involving the health effects of environmental contaminants and other chemicals. This role springs from two key problems that face scientists and public agencies required to set acceptable exposure standards or to determine criteria for the toxicity of therapeutic chemicals: How do you evaluate effects that may show up only as subtle functional disturbances? And how do you de tect toxic effects early enough so that they may still be reversible, before they produce major damage? The contributions in this book come from a collection of scientists whose interests span a wide variety of problem areas. The focus is largely on me thodological issues because they represent the most immediate concern of the discipline. We expect that this collection of papers will represent a useful source book for behavioral toxicology for some time. For the past few years, the University of Rochester's Department of Radiation Biology and Biophysics has sponsored a series of international conferences on chemical toxicity, partly as a response to concern over the con sequences to health of the rich chemical soup in which we live. This book is based upon presentations made to the fifth of the series. Held in June, 1972, it was the first formal meeting devoted to behavioral toxicology in this country.

Book Description
- An up-to-date overview of behavioral pharmacology. Drugs & Behavior starts with descriptions of basic pharmacological concepts of drug administration and pharmacokinetics, research methodology including clinical trials, tolerance and withdrawal, drug conditioning, addiction processes, and the neuroscience of drug action. Each chapter applies these concepts to different classes of recreational and therapeutic drugs. Each chapter also includes a section on the history of the drug class being described to place the drugs in their historical and social context. The text is written to be understandable to students without a background in pharmacology, neuroscience, or psychology. Learning Goals Upon completing this book, readers should be able to: Understand the behaviors of people who use drugs as medicine and for recreation Understand new trends and developments in pharmacology Identify the subjective, behavioral, and neurological differences between the use of both classes of drug

Book Description
This volume contains commissioned reviews of research on biological influences on violent or aggressive behavior. The areas reviewed include genetic contributions to the probability of violent and related behaviors; brain structure and functioning as implicated in aggressive behavior; the roles of hormonal and neurological interactions in violent behavior; the neurochemistry of violence and aggression and its implications for the management of those behaviors; and dietary influences on violent behavior.

Book Description
Behavioural models in psychopharmacology are used for different purposes. The main concern of industrial psychopharmacologists is specifically to develop new and improved drugs for the treatment of mental disorders, while basic scientists use animal models to investigate the underlying nature of such conditions. The important distinction between these different perspectives is made explicit for the first time in this book. By considering such conditions as anxiety, depression, mania and schizophrenia, feeding disorders, dementia, and drug dependence, this book provides a comprehensive and critical review of the adequacy of the behavioural procedures used by psychopharmacologists to model psychiatric disorders. Graduate students and research workers in pscyhopharmacology, from both academic and industrial spheres, as well as clinicians, will find this book of considerable interest.

Multiple subtypes of dopamine receptors exist in the brain. This volume reviews the characteristics of D-1, D-2, D-3 and D-4 receptors and describes the current concepts of their involvement in motor disorders and in the control of schizophrenia. Readers: the book will be of great interest to professionals in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, neuroscience, cell biology and therapeutic applications in clinical medicine as antipsychotics, anti-Parkinson's disease and related areas.

Book Description
(Publisher-supplied data) This book represents the first systematic discussion of the Gateway Hypothesis, a developmental hypothesis formulated to model how adolescents initiate and progress in the use of various drugs. In the United States, this progression proceeds from the use of tobacco or alcohol to the use of marijuana and other illicit drugs. This volume presents a critical overview of what is currently known about the Gateway Hypothesis. The authors of the chapters explore the hypothesis from various perspectives ranging from developmental social psychology to prevention and intervention science, animal models, neurobiology and analytical methodology. This volume is original and unique in its purview, covering a broad view of the Gateway Hypothesis. The juxtaposition of epidemiological, intervention, animal and neurobiological studies represents a new stage in the evolution of drug research, in which epidemiology and biology inform one another in the understanding of drug abuse.

Book Description
Neuropathology of Drug Addictions and Substance Misuse, Volume 2: Stimulants, Club and Dissociative Drugs, Hallucinogens, Steroids, Inhalants and International Aspects is the second of three volumes in this informative series and offers a comprehensive examination of the adverse consequences of the most common drugs of abuse. Each volume serves to update the reader's knowledge on the broader field of addiction as well as to deepen understanding of specific addictive substances. Volume 2 addresses stimulants, club and dissociative drugs, hallucinogens, and inhalants and solvents. Each section provides data on the general, molecular and cellular, and structural and functional neurological aspects of a given substance, with a focus on the adverse consequences of addictions. Research shows that the neuropathological features of one addiction are often applicable to those of others, and understanding these commonalties provides a platform for studying specific addictions in more depth and may ultimately lead researchers toward new modes of understanding, causation, prevention, and treatment. However, marshalling data on the complex relationships between addictions is difficult due to the myriad material and substances. - Offers a modern approach to understanding the pathology of substances of abuse, offering an evidence-based ethos for understanding the neurology of addictions - Fills an existing gap in the literature by serving as a "one-stop-shopping synopsis of everything to do with the neuropathology of drugs of addiction and substance misuse - Includes in each chapter: list of abbreviations, abstract, introduction, applications to other addictions and substance misuse, mini-dictionary of terms, summary points, 6+ figures and tables, and full references - Offers coverage of preclinical, clinical, and population studies, from the cell to whole organs, and from the genome to whole body
