Introduction : L'internat en psychiatrie comporte des enjeux et des modalités définis à plusieurs niveaux (européen, national, régional), qui diffèrent entre ces différents échelons et sont au final hétérogènes en France. Cette formation, telle qu'elle est organisée, suscite une insatisfaction globale chez les internes et les formateurs, qui en pointent diverses limites et carences. L'objectif de cette étude pilote qualitative était d'explorer de manière large les perspectives d'internes en psychiatrie français sur leur formation spécialisée afin de préparer la mise en place d'une recherche qualitative européenne. Matériel et méthodes: Des entretiens individuels ont été conduits auprès de cinq internes en psychiatrie parisiens en troisième et quatrième année, entre mars et juillet 2018. Une analyse thématique a été effectuée à partir des enregistrements de ces entretiens. Résultats: L'analyse thématique a retrouvé trois thèmes. (i) Comment choisit-on psychiatrie ? Un choix sous-tendu par un processus et motivé surtout par les expériences relationnelles permises par la psychiatrie. (ii) Comment devient-on psychiatre ? Un parcours complexe aux enjeux incertains et effectué en partie seul et en partie accompagné. (iii) Qu'est-ce que la psychiatrie ? Caractérisée avant tout par la place centrale du sujet dans la maladie et les soins et l'importance et la nature de la relation dans cette discipline, et aussi par sa richesse et ses différences par rapport aux autres. Discussion : Les internes décrivent une incertitude concernant les enjeux de leur formation, le rôle du psychiatre, la nature des troubles psychiatriques. Celle-ci peut être anxiogène et mal tolérée par les internes alors même qu'elle présente aussi des avantages dans l'apprentissage et la pratique de la psychiatrie. Par ailleurs, la place centrale occupée par le sujet en psychiatrie et les besoins et attentes des internes quant à leur formation apparaissent essentiels. Conclusion : Cette étude pilote a permis de dégager des axes d'exploration à intégrer dans la recherche européenne future, en particulier l'incertitude des internes en psychiatrie et leurs attentes relatives à la formation. L'étude devra être longitudinale. En France, elle devra également explorer les effets de la récente réforme de l'internat et être menée dans plusieurs régions.
