This monograph is a revised version of the D.Phil. thesis of the first author, submitted in October 1990 to the University of Oxford. This work investigates the problem of mobile robot navigation using sonar. We view model-based navigation as a process of tracking naturally occurring environment features, which we refer to as "targets". Targets that have been predicted from the environment map are tracked to provide that are observed, but not predicted, vehicle position estimates. Targets represent unknown environment features or obstacles, and cause new tracks to be initiated, classified, and ultimately integrated into the map. Chapter 1 presents a brief definition of the problem and a discussion of the basic research issues involved. No attempt is made to survey ex haustively the mobile robot navigation literature-the reader is strongly encouraged to consult other sources. The recent collection edited by Cox and Wilfong [34] is an excellent starting point, as it contains many of the standard works of the field. Also, we assume familiarity with the Kalman filter. There are many well-known texts on the subject; our notation derives from Bar-Shalom and Fortmann [7]. Chapter 2 provides a detailed sonar sensor model. A good sensor model of our approach to navigation, and is used both for is a crucial component predicting expected observations and classifying unexpected observations.

With the advent of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in public areas such as malls and airports, their harmonious coexistence with humans is crucial. AMRs must operate in a manner that ensures human safety, comfort, and acceptability to reduce stress. This is called Human Aware Navigation. This study introduces a framework for AMR navigation that prioritizes safety and human comfort in such environments, utilizing an enhanced Potential Field approach augmented by Fuzzy Inference Systems. To achieve a smooth AMR trajectory, the framework employs these systems based on AMR, human, and obstacle information. The proposed approach is tested across various scenarios, including complex, cluttered environments that mimic practical situations. Simulation results demonstrate that AMRs using the proposed method navigate human-rich environments safely and comfortably while mitigating common issues associated with Potential Field-based approaches, such as local minima and obstacles near the goal.

Advances in robotics and autonomous systems have opened new horizons for the scientists by creating new opportunities to explore extreme environments that would previously not have been possible. For example, robots that are deployed to study environmental processes such remote volcanos, monitor the climate variables under the adverse weather conditions, understand underground mines, and explore deep oceans which are all inaccessible or hazardous for the human. Industrial applications can also often be situated in extreme environments such as offshore oil and gas and nuclear industries. In such applications the autonomous robot is expected to complete tasks such as repair and maintenance, exploration, reconnaissance, inspection, and transportation which is either done in isolation or as a team of cooperative robots. Due to the harsh and severe conditions of such environments, designing an advanced robotic system that can endure them is a challenging task. The robot needs to cope with the time-varying, restricted, uncertain, and unstructured nature of the environment to achieve the planning and execution of the tasks. This in turn demands development of advanced, robust and adaptive motion control and navigation algorithms along with machine learning and deep learning algorithms with high cognitive capability for the robot to perceive the surrounding environment effectively. The use of both single and multi-robot platforms can be advantageous depending on the specific application and environment.
