Book Description
Our society gives importance to schooling. Ideally, students are expected to engage in academic activities and succeed in school. However, there are students who struggle to learn, get discouraged in the world of school, and eventually leave the school without mastering the basic skills. These students are classified as "at-risk". Many investigations regarding at-risk students have focused on why so many of them fail in school and in other aspects of their lives. Among the factors found to have significant contributions were students' adjustment and motivation. The main purpose of this experimental study is to enhance the personal and social adjustment and motivation of the students who are academically at-risk through the application of a Resiliency Training Program. A total of forty-two (42) students were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups. Both research groups were pretested and posttested using the California Test of Personality and the Achievement Motivation Profile. The Resiliency Training Program given experimental group is composed of 12 sessions, with one-hour duration held in one month. This intervention program aimed of fostering resilience among academically at-risk students by providing them opportunities to develop their adaptive behaviors and motivation. The t-test for dependent and independent samples were used to determined significant differences between the pretest and posttest scores of both the experimental and control groups. Findings revealed that the Resiliency Training Program could be useful in enhancing the personal and social adjustment as well as motivation of academically at-risk students.
