Comparable combustion performance data for Shell UMF, grade C, and MIL-F-5624C, grade JP-5, fuels were obtained using a heavy-duty version of the XRJ47-W-9 ram-jet engine operated in a 2.75 Mach number free-jet facility. Data were obtained for the two fuels over a range of fuel-air ratios, engine airflows, and engine-inlet temperatures. The test conditions were selected to provide combustor-inlet temperatures. The test conditions were selected to provide combustor-inlet conditions approximately representative of those which would be encountered over a range of altitudes and flight Mach numbers. The variation of combustion efficiency with fuel-air ratio for the two fuels is compared at the several inlet conditions. The pilot-burner ignition and operating limits with both fuels are also included. In general, the combustion efficiency with Shell UMF, grade C, fuel was 1 to 4 points lower than with MIL-F-5624C, grade JP-5, fuel.

The performance (combustion efficiency and blowout) of a conventional turbojet fuel, MIL-F-5624 (JP-3), and a low-volatility, high-density hydrocarbon, monomethylnaphthalene, in a single vaporizing type combustor for variations in inlet conditions is presented in this report. The MIL-F-5624 type fuel burned over a wider range of operating conditions and gave combustion efficiencies 2 to 16 percent higher than monomethylnaphthalene. Heat-input rate had little effect on the combustion efficiency of each fuel in the range investigated.

A brief combustion study of three boron-containing fuels was made in a 1/4 sector of an annular turbojet combustor. The three fuels were Hi-Cal-3, HEF-2 (primarily propylpentaborane), and a solution of 63 percent by weight pentaborane in JP-4 fuel. The combustion efficiencies of the three fuels were between 90 and 95 percent. A photographic comparison of deposits in the combustor is presented.

The effect of MIL-T-83133C grade JP-8 fuel, with respect to MIL-F46162C 1% S DF-2, was established for Army Material Handling Equipment clean-bum diesel engines. The areas investigated included emissions (gaseous and particulate), power, performance, and durability. The engines revealed reduced emissions utilizing JP-8, with an average decrease in power at 5 percent and an increase in fuel consumption of 2 percent. The durability of an Isuzu C-240 engine with JP-8 was enhanced relative to the MIL-F46162C fuel. Rough-terrain forklifts were evaluated for fuel consumption and power availability while utilizing JP-8 fuel.
