With the proliferation of research studies posted online, media outlets scrambling to pick up stories, and individuals posting unverified information via social media, the landscape for parents trying to understand the latest science as it pertains to their children has never been more challenging to navigate. This book is intended to assist pediatricians when discussing research findings with parents. It provides an overview of research practices and terminology, clarifies misconceptions about studies and findings, and explains the limitations of research when applied to medical decision making. Through this framework, physicians can explain their reasoning behind specific clinical recommendations. In addition to examining the broad concepts comprising research literacy, this book reviews the current findings in topics that pediatricians report discussing most often with parents, such as vaccines, diet, medications, and sleep. Pediatrician’s Guide to Discussing Research with Patients is a unique resource for pediatricians in encouraging the development of research literacy in their patients.

Book Description
In response to the rise in chronic medical conditions--and the growing use of complementary and alternative therapies--among pediatric and adolescent patients, healthcare practitioners are taking a serious look at pediatric integrative medicine (PIM). Although it dovetails with current concepts of preventive medicine, wellness, and patient control, PIM is still an evolving field with its own particular challenges and opportunities. A Guide to Integrative Pediatrics for the Healthcare Professional explores its subject through the more familiar lens of integrative medicine. This concise comprehensive resource synthesizes the knowledge base on a range of therapies commonly associated with PIM, such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, clinical hypnosis, yoga, homeopathy, and therapeutic massage, with findings on their effective use with children. Case examples illustrate uses of PIM modalities with allopathic medicine to treat young patients at various developmental stages, and the authors pinpoint safety and appropriateness concerns, answer licensing questions, and note clinical areas requiring further study. The wide-ranging information contained here will help support interest in PIM at the research, training, and practice levels. Features of the Guide: An introduction to basic concepts in PIM. Trends in IM/PIM education. A survey of complementary and alternative therapies, including biologically-based, body-based, mind-body, energy-based, and alternative whole systems. Current evidence for IM in treating common pediatric conditions. The future of integrative pediatrics. References and links for further information. Offering a front-row seat to the continued expansion of the field, A Guide to Integrative Pediatrics for the Healthcare Professional is a salient text not only for pediatricians but for all healthcare practitioners tasked with improving children's wellbeing. “/p>

Book Description
This book is a comprehensive guide to pediatric psychopharmacology, detailing medications used to treat a wide variety of childhood and adolescent mental illnesses. Childhood and adolescence represent critically important life stages in cognitive, social, and emotional development. Unfortunately, the prevalence of mental illness has been growing over the last several decades, especially among children. It is estimated that suicide is the second most common cause of death among adolescents and young adults in the United States. A crucial component of evidence-based mental health treatment of youth consists of careful, sophisticated, and compassionate medication treatment. This guide is divided into 18 chapters, with most covering the medications used to treat a specific disorder or group of disorders. Chapters comprehensively cover each medication’s history, FDA indication status and context, representation in the media, mechanism, extent of usage and research, and quality of evidence supporting its efficacy and safety. Chapters also cover approaches clinicians can use to discuss medications with patients—including alternative treatment options and integrating patient-level variables when choosing a medication. This book focuses on understanding patient and family perspectives on medication with suggested clinician responses to better communicate about prescription management. Chapters also include tables and figures, list resources and guidelines, and discuss controversies in the media. All prescribers to children and adolescents will find Pediatric Psychopharmacology Evidence to be a timely, comprehensive, and compassionate guide to the pharmacological treatment of young patients with mental illness.

Book Description
This Open access book offers updated and revised information on vessel health and preservation (VHP), a model concept first published in poster form in 2008 and in JVA in 2012, which has received a great deal of attention, especially in the US, UK and Australia. The book presents a model and a new way of thinking applied to vascular access and administration of intravenous treatment, and shows how establishing and maintaining a route of access to the bloodstream is essential for patients in acute care today. Until now, little thought has been given to an intentional process to guide selection, insertion and management of vascular access devices (VADs) and by default actions are based on crisis management when a quickly selected VAD fails. The book details how VHP establishes a framework or pathway model for each step of the patient experience, intentionally guiding, improving and eliminating risk when possible. The evidence points to the fact that reducing fragmentation, establishing a pathway, and teaching the process to all stakeholders reduces complications with intravenous therapy, improves efficiency and diminishes cost. As such this book appeals to bedside nurses, physicians and other health professionals.
