We must anticipate the events of a few months, in order to place the discussion with Mr. Staunton where it properly belong*, viz., with Morphy's achievements in England. Paul Morphy's principal object in coming to Europe was--to play a match with Mr. Staunton. I am well aware that a young gentleman, travelling for the first time in foreign countries, must have many objects in view; but, in this particular case, the pretext for the voyage, the very inducement for his friends to consent to his journey was to repeat that challenge personally, in England, which Mr. Staunton had declined on the ground of the place of combat not being in Europe. It is necessary that this point should be understood, because much of the controversy hinges upon it. If we examine the challenge addressed to Mr. Staunton by the Xew Orleans Chess Club, we find therein two main ideas: lstly. That Mr. Staunton is a representative of European chess. 2ndly. That American players challenge him to combat with their representative. Mr. Staunton's reply raised but one objection; and that objection led Paul Morphy to cross the Atlantic, in order to. remove the only stumbling-block in the way of the contest. I was constantly with Morphy after his arrival in London, and a frequent subject of conversation between us was the match with Mr. Staunton. That, too, was the first, the principal topic, at all the London Clubs we visited, and even'thing but the date was looked upon as decided. Mr. Staunton, however, had not, as yet, stated explicitly that he accepted the challenge, but he did so viva voce shortly after Mr. Morphy's arrival, ...

The Real Paul Morphy
Author: Charles Hertan
Publisher: New In Chess
ISBN: 9083382796
Category : Games & Activities
Languages : en
Pages : 626
Book Description
Paul Morphy might well be the most brilliant and enigmatic chess champion of all time. He burst onto the scene in 1858 as a 20-year-old and dominated the chess world for two short years, convincingly defeating all the strongest players. After conquering the European chess scene, Morphy was universally recognized as the greatest player of all time. But at the age of 22 he suddenly and permanently retired from serious competition. Morphy's greatness shone so brightly that 75 years later he was still considered the greatest by world champions Lasker and Capablanca. He is still revered for his brilliant combinations and other contributions to chess. Bobby Fischer called him 'perhaps the most accurate player who ever lived'. Garry Kasparov regarded him as 'the prototype of the strong 20th century grandmaster' and 'the forefather of modern chess'. There are many important biographies and game collections about Morphy. Award-winning chess author Charles Hertan brings us something new - a comprehensive modern biography that delves deep into his fascinating history, unearthing new information about Morphy's origins, intertwined with an in-depth exploration of Morphy's games, often overturning over 160 years of previous analysis. Hertan uses his experience as a professional psychotherapist to shed new light on Morphy's tragic mental deterioration. The author also examines the state of chess before Morphy, wading into the current debate about the role of the great masters Howard Staunton and Adolf Anderssen in chess history, and whether Morphy's time should rightly be called the 'Romantic Era'. The Real Paul Morphy brings you everything you need to know about Paul Morphy's life, chess and legacy in a single volume.

Paul Morphy
Author: David Lawson
Publisher: University of Louisiana at Lafayette
ISBN: 9781887366977
Category : Games & Activities
Languages : en
Pages : 398
Book Description
"Paul Morphy: The Pride and Sorrow of Chess" is the only full-length biography of Paul Morphy, the antebellum chess prodigy who launched United States participation in international chess and is still generally acknowledged as the greatest American chess player of all time. But Morphy was more than a player. He was a shy, retiring lawyer who had been taught that such games were no way to make a living. The strain of his fame and the pull of his domineering family led Morphy to set another precedent: chess madness. Morphy's mental descent after retiring from chess became a part of his lore, made all the more magnanimous by a spate of twentieth-century examples. "The Pride and Sorrow of Chess" tells the full known story of the life of Paul Morphy, from his privileged upbrining in New Orleans to his dominance of the chess world, to the later tragedy of his demise. This new edition of David Lawson's seminal work, still the principal source for all Morphy biographical presentations, also includes new biographical material about the biographer himself, telling the story of the author, his opus, and the previously unknown life that brought him to the research.
