Patrimonios vivos: música, performatividad y representación aborda el estudio del patrimonio cultural inmaterial y especialmente musical, como forma de conocimiento e instrumento de conmemoración y actualización de nuestro pasado, en la heterogeneidad de su representación. Examinamos el patrimonio inmaterial desde su doble dimensión, procesual, en el ejercicio de la transmisión cultural, y sistemática, la colección de prácticas y bienes que constituyen el conjunto cultural transmitido. Por ello, proponemos la exploración de las distintas formas de representación, de manera que los vínculos con el pasado y la construcción de la identidad cultural son materia de análisis desde las lecturas de las tradiciones y las prácticas expresivas. En esta concepción dinámica de los fenómenos expresivos es imprescindible contemplar igualmente los procesos culturales históricos y contemporáneos que han dado lugar a su apreciación como bienes colectivos. A partir de trabajos sobre la historia de la configuración de los patrimonios culturales, las relaciones internacionales fundamentales para la conservación del patrimonio ibérico, los estudios de caso de recuperación de patrimonios musicales y orales, y de revitalización de los mismos a través de la práctica contemporánea en los medios audiovisuales o en las fiestas populares se analizan los ejes de la construcción patrimonial en la definición de la ciudadanía y en las dinámicas de la práctica política contemporánea.

The Future of the Past is a biennial conference generally carried out during the commemoration date of the incorporation of Santa Ana de Los Ríos de Cuenca Ecuador as a World Heritage Site (WHS). It initiated in 2014, organized by the City Preservation Management research project (CPM) of the University of Cuenca, to create a space for dialoguing among interested actors in the cultural heritage field. Since then, this space has served to exchange initiatives and to promote coordinated actions based on shared responsibility, in the local context. The third edition of this conference took place in the context of the 20th anniversary of being listed as WHS and a decade of CPM as the Southern host of the PRECOM3OS UNESCO Chair (Preventive Conservation, Maintenance and Monitoring of Monuments and Sites). For the very first time, and thanks to the collaboration with the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation of the University of Leuven (Belgium), the conference expanded its local scope. On this occasion, contributions reflected round a worldwide challenge in the cultural field: revealing the paths towards participatory governance of cultural heritage. Participatory governance is understood as institutional decision-making structures supported by shared responsibilities and rights among diverse actors.

Rhythm, Ancestrality and Spirit in Maracatu de Nação and Candomblé: Repercussions examines how the highly percussive carnival practice of Maracatu de nação – an Afro-Brazilian musical and spiritual tradition originating in the north- eastern state of Pernambuco – has evolved in relation to the cosmology of Candomblé Nagô in the urban centres of Recife and Olinda, Brazil. Offering one of the first detailed ethnographic explorations into maracatu de nação, Candomblé Nagô and the connections between them, this book is a collaborative enquiry into frequently negated sacred and ancestral knowledge systems central to Afro-Brazilian musical-spiritual practices. Using an innovative research framework which integrates musical and rhythmic practices with spiritual, ancestral and ecological knowledge systems, readers are provided with an intimate ethnography based on eight years of friendship and learning with the oldest continuously active maracatu group in the world, Nação Leão Coroado, and its most recent leader, Mestre Afonso Aguiar (1948– 2018). Institutions in Recife, Brazil, have restructured subsidies in favor of encouraging musicians to become more entrepreneurial. Falina Enriquez explores how contemporary and traditional musicians in the fabled musical city have negotiated these intensified neoliberal cultural policies and economic uncertainties. Drawing on years of fieldwork, Enriquez shows how forcing artists to adopt “neutral” market solutions reinforces, and generates, overlapping racial and class-based inequalities. Lacking the social and financial resources of their middle-class peers, working-class musicians find it difficult to uphold institutional goals of connecting the city’s cultural roots to global markets and consumers. Enriquez also links the artists’ situation to that of cultural and creative workers around the world. As she shows, musical sponsorship in Recife and the contemporary gig economy elsewhere employ processes that, far from being neutral, uphold governmental and corporate ideologies that produce social stratification.
