Paradoxes of the Drug War & Paradoxes of the Holocaust is in my humble estimation, the most innovative and original book ever written on the subject matter of the "war on drugs." The subject matter of the "war on drugs" has attracted a considerable literature, including contemporary political writing, the social sciences, globalization studies, the publications of governments, international NGOs, and Irish rock stars. However, in my view, this voluminous literature largely re-hashes the same arguments year after year. My work does not.The following two papers, "Paradoxes of the Drug War," and "Paradoxes of the Holocaust" are linked thematically though not substantively by the concept of paradox. I also have linked the two papers, one paper seemingly morally objectionable in its subject matter, and the other, morally upright, in part because of the contemporary moral indecisiveness - some might call it weakness - to confront with explicit frankness the failures of the "drug war." (This includes one of the disturbing paradoxes dealt with in this book, namely, the increase in the size of the international drug market - at the same time - as the rise, spread, and diffusion of seemingly overwhelming and near ubiquitous surveillance, monitoring, and database technologies available to the world's most powerful states). The areas along the U.S.-Mexico border are commonly portrayed as a hot spot for gang activity, drug trafficking, and violence. Yet when Robert J. Durán conducted almost a decade’s worth of ethnographic research in border towns between El Paso, Texas, and southern New Mexico—a region notorious for gang activity, according to federal officials—he found significantly less gang membership and activity than common fearmongering claims would have us believe. Instead, he witnessed how the gang label was used to criminalize youth of Mexican descent—to justify the overrepresentation of Latinos in the justice system, the implementation of punitive practices in the school system, and the request for additional resources by law enforcement. In The Gang Paradox, Durán analyzes the impact of deportation, incarceration, and racialized perceptions of criminality on Latino families and youth along the border. He draws on ethnography, archival research, official data sources, and interviews with practitioners and community members to present a compelling portrait of Latino residents’ struggles amid deep structural disadvantages. Durán, himself a former gang member, offers keen insights into youth experience with schools, juvenile probation, and law enforcement. War is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon that cannot be understood merely by isolating its underlying principles. The elements that compose the vast mosaic of our conceptions of war must be identified and examined in light of their philosophical origins. Michael Gelven not only identifies what the fundamental principles are, but he also extracts from the history of philosophy the arguments and analyses of the concepts that explain how we think about it. War and Existence is primarily concerned with what war is or what the truth about war is rather than the moral question of whether war ever ought to be waged; it only indirectly considers the military concerns of how war out to be carried out. The elements or marks of war, such as courage, horror, heroism, sacrifice, command, and vastness, are each examined by reference to a great philosophical figure whose critical analyses of these elements provide us with a deep understanding of them.
