This volume presents a cross-section of the most common transport vehicles produced and used by the German army. Tanks plus auxiliary vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, vans, ambulances, trucks and tractors made it possible for the troops to keep moving. These lightly armored or unarmored vehicles--aka "soft skins"--operated behind the front lines, maintaining supply lines, connecting armies with their home bases, and ultimately determining the outcome of battle. Beginning with the development of military vehicles in the early 1930s, this volume discusses the ways in which this new technology influenced and, to some extent, facilitated Hitler's program of rearmament. Excerpt: The Panhard 178 (officially designated as Automitrailleuse de Decouverte Panhard modele 1935, 178 being the internal project number at Panhard) or "Pan-Pan" was an advanced French reconnaissance 4x4 armoured car that was designed for the French Cavalry before World War II. It had a crew of four and was equipped with an effective 25 mm main armament and a 7.5 mm coaxial machine gun. A number of these vehicles were in 1940 taken over by the Germans after the Fall of France and employed as the Panzerspahwagen P204 (f); for some months after the armistice of June production continued for the benefit of Germany. After the war a derived version, the Panhard 178B, was again taken into production by France. In 1931 the French Cavalry conceived a plan for the future production of armoured fighting vehicles. One of the classes foreseen was that of an Automitrailleuse de Decouverte or AMD, a specialised long range reconnaissance vehicle. The specifications were formulated on 22 December 1931, changed on 18 November 1932 and approved on 9 December 1932. They called for a weight of four metric tons, a range of 400 km, a speed of 70 km/h, a cruising speed of 40 km/h, a turning circle of twelve metres, 5-8 mm armour, a 20 mm gun and a 7.5 mm machine gun. In 1933 one of the competing companies - the others being Renault, Berliet and Latil - that had put forward proposals, Panhard, was allowed to build a prototype. I would like to bring to your attention my historical monograph dedicated to the first French automobile company, Panhard and Levassor, which consists of two volumes. The first volume (120 pages) covers the period from the mid-19th century, before the company, then called Perin et Cie., began producing cars, and ended with the death of Emile Levassor in April 1897. The second volume (270 pages) ends with the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. In France, this period is called La Belle Epoque. In America, this automotive era is known as the Brass Era. In my book, I describe in detail the entire technical evolution of Panhard and Levassor, throughout which the company went from producing furniture, wood, and metalworking machines, to the most advanced automobiles in the world. Starting as a furniture workshop, Panhard and Levassor grew into the world's largest automotive company in the early 20th century. The book uses archival documents from Panhard and Levassor, kindly provided to me by Philippe Krebs and the archives at the Centre d'archives de Terre Blanche, as well as the French Patent Office (INPI). I am also grateful to Bernard Vermeylen for the advice he provided. In my research, I used a multitude of French, American, and English books and magazines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among them are French magazines La Locomotion, La Vie Automobile, Omnia, and La Vie au grand air, British publications The Autocar and The Automotor Journal, and American magazines The Horseless Age and The Automobile, among others. The book contains hundreds of illustrations, many of which are unique and have not been published anywhere else. For example, at my request, workers at the Revs Museum in Florida photographed an 1896 Panhard and Levassor engine and transmission.
