Book Description
Why and how American colleges and universities need to change in order to meet the nation's pressing needs American higher education faces some serious problems—but they are not the ones most people think. In this brief and accessible book, two leading experts show that many so-called crises—from the idea that typical students are drowning in debt to the belief that tuition increases are being driven by administrative bloat—are exaggerated or simply false. At the same time, many real problems—from the high dropout rate to inefficient faculty staffing—have received far too little attention. In response, William G. Bowen and Michael S. McPherson provide a frank assessment of the biggest challenges confronting higher education and propose a bold agenda for reengineering essential elements of the system to meet them. The result promises to help shape the debate about higher education for years to come. Lesson Plan shows that, for all of its accomplishments, higher education today is falling short when it comes to vital national needs. Too many undergraduates are dropping out or taking too long to graduate; minorities and the poor fare worse than their peers, reinforcing inequality; and college is unaffordable for too many. But these problems could be greatly reduced by making significant changes, including targeting federal and state funding more efficiently; allocating less money for "merit aid" and more to match financial need; creating a respected “teaching corps” that would include nontenure faculty; improving basic courses in fields such as math by combining adaptive learning and face-to-face teaching; strengthening leadership; and encouraging more risk taking. It won't be easy for faculty, administrators, trustees, and legislators to make such sweeping changes, but only by doing so will they make it possible for our colleges and universities to meet the nation’s demands tomorrow and into the future.

Book Description
Every family has a story-but very few have a story like Joseph Sadusky and his sons, Daveon and Mark. In Magic Lessons, Joe shares a look back as he, a single gay man, decided to build his family through transracial adoption. In a lighthearted collection of stories and lessons learned, Joe humorously but honestly describes the process as he set out to adopt two older children, and what happened after they came together under one roof and became "us." Along the way, Joe details how often he was, in his own words, "amazed, aggravated, mind-blown, jaw-dropped, befuddled, exasperated, and awed-both in good ways and bad, both by my kids and by the many players who have had a part in our family story overall." Among these players are members of the majority-racial, cultural, and otherwise-who taught Joe many bewildering, if not outright painful, lessons about being "other." To complete the picture, Joe reflects on his own mistakes made as he has ventured through the land of alt-parenthood.

We all know that in order to accomplish a certain thing we must concentrate. It is of the utmost value to learn how to concentrate. To make a success of anything you must be able to concentrate your entire thought upon the idea you are working out. Do not become discouraged, if you are unable to hold your thought on the subject very long at first. There are very few that can. It seems a peculiar fact that it is easier to concentrate on something that is not good for us, than on something that is beneficial. This tendency is overcome when we learn to concentrate consciously. If you will just practice a few concentration exercises each day you will find you will soon develop this wonderful power.

Book Description
A new theory in social psychology: the tyranny of groups vs. the individual in unique presentation. Collective insanity, the contagion of lunacy. What does it take to be a champion standing out in a sea of sharks? That is the essence of the writings of Karen Kellock. Koestler [1962] has noted the blending of art and science marks all discoveries. “She is a maestro with words, all about the herds.” Mansell Pattison, Postdoctoral Chair, UCI School of Medicine SYSTEMS THEORY. The intricacies of systems affect all members and it means addiction/depression. They're far more concerned with what people think than truth, and from that comes bedlam/ruin. They make wrong decisions affecting other people based on flimsy or vile motives, many evil. We're to cover each other's faults but our sins are shouted from the rooftops by our spouses. The sins of the odd stranger are magnified, the sins of the conformist brother are taken in stride. If your motives are good you can be as arrogant and conceited as you please. People: They'll advise you wrong and say it's ok to sin. They want you down so they can take over, friend. You're a lady/man of substance and he/she has nothing inside to assist only to tear down: RESIST. Cover by Ayyaz Khan
