The theme of the 1983 annual ISOTT meeting emphasizes a dual scientific approach, utilizing interdisciplinary theoretical and experimental methodology, to unravel the secrets of oxygen transport to tissue. ISOTT is leading the way in the development and application of forefront techniques to allow a more basic understanding of this important physiological phenomena. The Society can be proud of its contributions in helping to advance the gross analysis techniques of the past to the synergistic study of tissue micro areas by sophisticated mathematical and experimental means. There is a tremendous need to continue the pursuit of basic knowledge at the regional tissue level and to move rapidly to the examination of fundamental biochemical reactions at the cellular level. To accomplish this, it will be necessary to take advantage of the most powerful computing machinery presently available and to apply state-of-the-art experimental methodology, such as polarographic, autoradiographic and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques in our studies. Our Society must continue to work hard to push back barriers to enhance our understanding of mechanisms that lead to pathology. Hopefully, our efforts will be significant in helping science to overcome the many dreadful diseases that mankind faces in today's world. In 1996, for its 24th scientific meeting, the International Society on Oxygen Trans port to Tissue made its third visit to the United Kingdom. The previous two meetings were held in Cambridge in 1977 and 1986, but this was the first meeting to be held "north of the border" in Scotland. It was attended by some 186 delegates and accompanying persons and there were 128 presentations. The venue was the West Park Centre, the University of Dundee's residential conference centre, and ISOTT was only the second major meeting to be held there using the new Villa accommodation. Dundee's slogan is "City of Discovery" since it became the permanent home of the Royal Research Ship Discovery which was built in the city and was used by Captain Scott on his first ex pedition to the Antarctic. The ISOTT meeting also fulfilled its promise of being a meeting of dis covery with sessions on all aspects of oxygen transport to tissue. The inclusion of a session on oxygen transport in vascular disease reflected the interests of the local participants. All of the manuscripts were reviewed both for their scientific and editorial accept ability and in some 50% of cases, revisions were requested from the authors. Some manu scripts were ultimately rejected. However, in view of the importance of producing the Proceedings as quickly as possible it is possible that some minor errors may have slipped through, for which the editors apologise.

The Ottawa '88 meeting of the International Society for Oxygen Transport to Tissue attracted a record number of participants and presentations. We were able to avoid simultaneous sessions and still keep the scientific program to four days by using poster sessions followed by plenary debate on each poster. To paraphrase the British physicist David Bohm, we tried to avoid an ordinary discussion, in which people usually stick to a relatively fixed position and try to convince others to change. This situation does not give rise to anything creative. So, we attempted instead to establish a true dialogue in which a person may prefer and support a certain point of view, but does not hold it nonnegotiab1y. He or she is ready to listen to others with sufficient sympathy, and is also ready to change his or her own view if there is a good reason to do so. Our Society is in its "teen" years, and there are even some arguments about its exact age. Many newer members have raised questions concerning the history of the Society. For this reason, I have asked one of the "founding fathers", D. Bruley, to prepare a brief account of the birth and early history of the Society which appears on the following page.

Since there are many different tissues and organs in the body, a study of oxygen transport to tissue necessarily involves a great diversity of bodily functions. Furthermore, these tissue functions can be approached from the viewpoint of several disciplines. Even tually, however, all of these approaches must be combined to arrive at a comprehensive picture. This multidisciplinary effort, though imperative, has been implemented slowly because traditional biologi cal science has been largely organ- or discipline oriented. Initia tives to realize an effective international multidisciplinary collab oration have assumed increasing momentum for the past 20 years. These include meetings held in Bad Oeynhausen in 1965 (book in 1968, edited by D. W. Lubbers, U. C. Luft, G. Thews and E. Witzleb), in Nijmegen in 1968 (book in 1969, edited by F. Kreuzer), in Vancouver in 1970 (J. Strauss), and in Dortmund in 1971; this last was in connection with the 25th International Physiological Congress in Munich (book in 1973, edited by M. Kessler, D. F. Bruley, L. C. Clark, Jr. , D. W. Lubbers, I. A. Silver and J. Strauss). This increasing international cooperation called for a more formal organization of these individual initiatives. The credit for taking this decisive step goes to H. I. Bicher and D. F. Bruley from the U. S. A. and D. W. Lubbers and M. Kessler from Germany, who got together in 1972 to plan a large-scale inter national meeting and to organize an international society.

Longmuir v BRIEF HISTORY OF ISOTT The Society endured a long gestation period. During the 1960s its formation was discussed at a number of international meetings devoted to oxygen in biological systems. Prominent among a great number of such gatherings were those held at the Institute of Diseases of the Chest, London 1960; Bedford College, London 1963; Queen Elizabeth College, London 1963; and the Seventh Bad Oeynhausen Conference, 1967. At first, reservations were expressed about the desirability of forming a highly specialized society which might not achieve the "critical mass" necessary for its continued existence. However, the 1971 meeting in the Max Planck Institut fur Arbeitsphysiologie, Dortmund, answered these doubts, and Dr. Melvin Knisely commenced planning a very successful inaugural meeting in South Carolina. At this meeting in 1973 in Charleston and Clemson, the Society was formed with the customary remit of the promotion of scientific exchanges.

Seventeen years after the 2nd International Symposium on Oxygen Transport to Tissue, which was held in Mainz in March 1975, the local Organizing Committee and the Board of ISOTT were pleased to host the ISOTT Conference in Mainz on the Rhine again. The venue of the 20th meeting was the prestigious, fully restored Schloss Waldthausen (Waldthausen Castle) which provided a special setting for ISOTT 1992. The beautiful front view of the castle became part of the ISOTT 1992 logo. The 20th ISOTT Meeting was held in Mainz from August 26th through August 30th, 1992. The Conference attracted 200 active participants from 16 countries. The theme of this meeting emphasized oxygen transport to tumors but as in earlier meetings, essentially all aspects of oxygen transport within the body were covered as demonstrated by the manuscripts comprising this volume of the series "Oxygen Transport to Tissue". All manuscripts were reviewed. Extensive revisions were made in about 25% and modest revision in about another 30%. Because we had to compromise between the aim of rapid publication on the one hand and the need for thorough review on the other, minor errors in format and some typographical errors were not corrected. Except for some revisions, all of the original camera-ready manuscripts in this volume were prepared by the authors themselves and we greatly appreciate their cooperation.
