Outlines of Aesthetics
Author: Hermann Lotze
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330976449
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
Excerpt from Outlines of Aesthetics: Dictated Portions of the Lectures of Hermann Lotze The "Outlines of AEsthetics," like those already published upon the subjects of Practical Philosophy and the Philosophy of Religion, comprises the only systematic presentation of the author's opinions on a subject of great interest as approached from the philosophical point of view. These brief lecture notes are presented in the place of what Lotze would have written if he had lived to complete the third volume of his System of Philosophy. Several other monographs by his hand, however, cover various parts of the general theory of the beautiful and of its application to the arts, with considerably more of detail than do the chapters of this volume of Dictate. Two articles, which originally appeared in the "Gottinger Studien" and were afterward published separately, discussed the topics treated in the two chapters of the first, or more strictly theoretical part of this volume. Of these, the one published in 1845 dealt with "the Conception of Beauty"; the other appeared in 1847 and bore the title "Concerning the Conditions of Beauty in Art." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Coleridge Notebooks V3 Notes
Author: Kathleen Coburn
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000736431
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 997
Book Description
First published in 2002. Volume 3 of the Notes on the Notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, spanning from 1804 to 1819. The volume is in two parts, text and notes. During his adult life until his death in 1834, Coleridge made entries in more than sixty notebooks. Neither commonplace books nor diaries, but something of both, they contain notes on literary, theological, philosophical, scientific, social and psychological matters, plans for and fragments of works and many other items of great interest. Shortly after World War II, Kathleen Coburn, formerly of Victoria College in Toronto, rediscovered this great collection of unpublished manuscripts. With the support of the Coleridge estate, she embarked on a career of editing and publishing these volumes and was awarded with many honours for her work, including: a Leverhulme Award (1948), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1953), a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (1958), the Order of Canada (1974) and an honorary doctorate from her own university. Originally projected as a five volume set (each volume consisting of a book of text and a book of notes).
