Author: P. Wallace Platt
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442659092

Languages : en
Pages : 601
Book Description
The Dictionary of Basilian Biography contains 632 biographical entries on the members of the Congregation of Saint Basil who died in the years between 1822, when the congregation was founded, and 2002. The dictionary presents the personal background, education, and various appointments as well as the character, talents, and bibliography of each member, while defining the contribution of each in the educational or pastoral work of the Basilian Fathers. This heritage belongs not only to the Basilian Fathers or the Catholic Church, but to the wider societies and cultures of the countries that were touched by the work of the Basilians. This second edition of the Dictionary of Basilian Biography is approximately three times the size of the original edition by Father Robert J. Scollard, published in 1969. The increase in size is due not only to the additional number of members who died between that year and 2002, but also to additional archival research into the lives and careers of the early members of the Congregation in France. It represents eight years of work by editor P. Wallace Platt and his editorial board, enriching the book and balancing its presentation.

Assumption Parish
Author: Vivian Achee Solar
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 0738591955
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
Nestled along Bayou Lafourche just south of the Mississippi River, Assumption Parish boasts a particularly bountiful heritage as an ancient and proud community. Descendants of founding families still live and thrive in the community. They read the Assumption Pioneer, the same weekly journal their ancestors read. Sportsmen enjoy Lake Verret, Bayou Lafourche, and Belle River, just as their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents did. Plentiful natural resources made settlement possible for the fishing communities near Pierre Part. Establishment of the community was strengthened by such resources, especially the lush, rich alluvial soil, which made much of the parish prime property for the burgeoning sugar industry of the 1800s. In fact, sugar is still the primary crop grown in the region. The convenience of commerce transportation along Bayou Lafourche was pivotal in forming Assumption Parish's communities. Residents have enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming here since the parish's establishment in 1807.

Petun to Wyandot
Author: Charles Garrad
Publisher: University of Ottawa Press
ISBN: 0776621505
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 638
Book Description
In Petun to Wyandot, Charles Garrad draws upon five decades of research to tell the turbulent history of the Wyandot tribe, the First Nation once known as the Petun. Combining and reconciling primary historical sources, archaeological data and anthropological evidence, Garrad has produced the most comprehensive study of the Petun Confederacy. Beginning with their first encounters with French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1616 and extending to their decline and eventual dispersal, this book offers an account of this people from their own perspective and through the voices of the nations, tribes and individuals that surrounded them. Through a cross-reference of views, including historical testimony from Jesuits, European explorers and fur traders, as well as neighbouring tribes and nations, Petun to Wyandot uncovers the Petun way of life by examining their culture, politics, trading arrangements and legends. Perhaps most valuable of all, it provides detailed archaeological evidence from the years of research undertaken by Garrad and his colleagues in the Petun Country, located in the Blue Mountains of Central Ontario. Along the way, the author meticulously chronicles the work of other historians and examines their theories regarding the Petun's enigmatic life story.
