If the sun broke through the clouds on the twelfth day of February 1809 it lighted and brightened a little log cabin on a meandering creek in Hardin County (now Larue), Kentucky in which Abraham Lincoln was ushered into this world. I doubt if the birth of anyone now living and born in the United States was attended with tragedy and sorrow greater than his. Poverty and obscurity were his companions in the long struggle upward to fame. Out of the valley of oblivion he rose, however, like a great majestic mountain, tipped with white, to the achievement of human success and service to his fellow men.
