Book Description
Grant Morrison's THE INVISIBLES has been hailed as an ambitious comics masterpiece, the key to Morrison's entire body of work, and the inspiration for THE MATRIX. But it's also frequently written off as incomprehensible.Using a conversational, accessible style, Patrick Meaney (director of GRANT MORRISON: TALKING WITH GODS) opens up THE INVISIBLES through in-depth analysis that makes sense of the series's complicated ideas, fractured chronology, and delirious blend of fiction and reality. Meaney also explores how the series's fictional conspiracy theories fare in the wake of 9/11 and the War on Terror. The book includes an extensive interview with Grant Morrison and an introduction by Timothy Callahan (author of GRANT MORRISON: THE EARLY YEARS).From Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. Book Description
The enlightened notion of displaying the decomposed elements of a sentence pictorially has had a long history in the U.S. The pedagogical idea was developed by Stephen Watkins Clark in his 1847 book with the mouthful-of-a-title A Practical Grammar: In Which Words, Phrases & Sentences are Classified According to Their Offices and Their Various Relationships to Each Another - a true sentence diagramming challenge! Clark's scheme of deploying the parts of a sentence into stacked and adjacent cartoon-like balloons or bubbles was improved upon in Higher Lessons in English Grammar, (first edition 1877) by Alonzo Reed and Brainerd Kellogg of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Their "geometry of grammar" - as it has been called - is predicated on the idea that students would better learn how to structure sentences if they could see them drawn as linear graphic structures.

Book Description
ÒThese sermons represent an attempt to approach the central meaning of the Cross along several confessedly incomplete avenues of approach. I think of them as a little circle of converging but incompleted radii, all pointing toward (and therefore in a sense defining), but none of them finally touching, the real heart of the meaning of the Cross. Were any of us able at last to do this, we should unlock the mystery of life itself. Even Dr. Moberly, in his great book 'Atonement and Personality', begins by saying: 'Atonement is a reality much too fundamental to human consciousness, to be capable of any ready explanation. Our explanations, at their best, are still always partial explanations. It is always more than our understanding of it.' And so it is that one does not hesitate to add his own convictions to the many words that are written and said about the meaning of the Cross of Christ. --from the Foreword

Book Description
Fearing an imminent Nazi invasion, the British government interned 28,000 men and women of enemy nationality living in Britain in the spring of 1940. Most were Jewish refugees who, having fled Nazi persecution, were appalled to find themselves imprisoned as potential Nazi spies. Using oral histories, unpublished letters and memoirs, artifacts and newspapers from the camps, and government documents, We Built Up Our Lives tells the compelling story of sixty-three of these internees. It is a seldom-told part of the history of World War II and the Holocaust and a classic tale of human courage and resilience. We Built Up Our Lives describes the survival mechanisms relied upon by the Jewish refugees. Although the internees, imprisoned in Britain, the Isle of Man, Canada, and Australia, were adequately housed and fed and rarely mistreated, they were cut off from family, friends, school, and work--everything that had given meaning to their lives. Resisting boredom, anger, and despair, the internees made the best of a bad situation by creating education, culture, and community within the camps. Before and after as well as during the internment--in Nazi Germany and in Britain--educational resources and social networks were essential to the refugees' efforts to build up their lives. Equally important were personal qualities of courage, ingenuity, assertiveness, and resilience.
