Book Description
The growing importance of the systems for symbolic computation has greatly influenced the decision of organizing DISCO '90 which is short for International Symposium on Design and Implementation of Symbolic Computation Systems. DISCO '90 focuses mainly on the most innovative methodological and technological aspects of hardware and software system design and implementation for Symbolic and Algebraic Computation, Automated Reasoning, Software Environments (Languages and User Interfaces), and Automatic Programming. In particular, it includes papers on the design and the development of significant running systems. The general objective of DISCO '90 is to present an up-to-date view of the field, while encouraging the scientific exchange among academic, industrial and user communities of the development of systems for symbolic computation.

Book Description
Volume 4 is a complete guide to programming with the X Toolkit Intrinsics, the library of C language routines that facilitates the design of user interfaces with reusable components called widgets. It provides concepts and examples that show how to use the various X Toolkit routines. The first few chapters are devoted to using widgets; the remainder of the book covers the more complex task of writing new widgets. Uses the Motif 1.2 widget set in examples and covers X11 Release 5. Volume 4 includes: Introduction to the X Window System. Building applications with widgets. Constructing a bitmap editor with widgets. An overview of each widget in the widget set. Basic widget methods./li> Events, translations, and accelerators. Event handlers, timeouts, and work procedures. Resource management and type conversion. Selections and window manager interaction. Geometry management. Menus, gadgets, and cascaded pop-ups. Miscellaneous techniques. Comparison of Athena, OSF/Motif, and AT&T OPEN LOOK widgets. This book is designed to be used with Volume 5, X Toolkit Intrinsics Reference Manual, which provides reference pages for each of the Xt functions, the widget classes defined by Xt, and the Athena widget set.

Book Description
This book is the final outcome of the Eurographics Workshop on Design, Specification and Verification of Interactive Systems, that was held in Bonas, from June 7 to 9, 1995. This workshop was the second of its kind, following the successful first edition in Italy in 1994. The goal of this ongoing series of meetings is to review the state of the art in the domain of tools, notations and methodologies supporting the design of Interactive Systems. This acknowledges the fact that making systems that are friendlier to the user makes the task ever harder to the designers of such systems, and that much research is still needed to provide the appropriate conceptual and practical tools. The workshop was located in the Chateau de Bonas, in the distant countryside of Toulouse, France. Tms location has been selected to preserve the quiet and studious atmosphere that was established in the monastery of Santa Croce at Bocca di Magra for the first edition, and that was much enjoyed by the participants. The conversations initiated during the sessions often lasted till late at night, in the peaceful atmosphere of the Gers landscape.

Book Description
This book introduces the concepts and features of Linux. It describes the features and services of the Internet which have been instrumental in the rapid development and wide distribution of Linux and focuses on the graphical interface, network capability, and extended tools of Linux. It also gives an overview of the wide range of freeware applications available for Linux. Now completely revised and expanded to help the reader take full advantage of the high-performance of Linux 2.0, this third edition lists all of the currently supported hardware; provides the latest information on Linux as client/server; explains the newest applications including StarOffice 3.1, new graphics tools (including GIMP), Xemacs, and LyX; and presents the most up to date information on security and cryptography. Plus, there is a new UNIX command reference with entries grouped by purpose, as well as a new section on how to deal with errors. All in all, the most up-to-date information on Linux available!

Book Description
DISCO 92 was held on the Newton Park campus of Bath College of Higher Education, England, April 13-15, 1992. Beside the formal lectures dedicated to design and implementation issues of computer algebra, there were several software demonstrations and an opportunity for system designers to compare systems. This volume presents the proceedings of the conference. It contains 18 papers on a variety of design and implementation issues. One general theme which clearly emerges is the need for interconnections between systems, as no one systems incorporates all the facilities that users want. Various effortsare being made to design such links, but generally in limited contexts (suchas the Maple project or the Posso project).

Book Description
The effectiveness of the user-computer interface has become increasingly important as computer systems have become useful tools for persons not trained in computer science. In fact, the interface is often the most important factor in the success or failure of any computer system. Dealing with the numerous subtly interrelated issues and technical, behavioral, and aesthetic considerations consumes a large and increasing share of development time and a corresponding percentage of the total code for any given application. A revision of one of the most successful books on human-computer interaction, this compilation gives students, researchers, and practitioners an overview of the significant concepts and results in the field and a comprehensive guide to the research literature. Like the first edition, this book combines reprints of key research papers and case studies with synthesizing survey material and analysis by the editors. It is significantly reorganized, updated, and enhanced; over 90% of the papers are new. An invaluable resource for systems designers, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, managers, and anyone concerned with the effectiveness of user-computer interfaces, it is also designed for use as a primary or supplementary text for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in human-computer interaction and interface design. - Human computer interaction--historical, intellectual, and social - Developing interactive systems, including design, evaluation methods, and development tools - The interaction experience, through a variety of sensory modalities including vision, touch, gesture, audition, speech, and language - Theories of information processing and issues of human-computer fit and adaptation
