"The seventeenth is the greatest of all centuries for the organ and for its literature. Never before or since has this instrument served as such an important medium of musical composition. Such composers as Frescobaldi, Cabanilles, De Grigny, the Couperins, Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Scheidt, Bruhns, Buxtehude, Froberger, and Pachelbel regarded it as their principal outlet for creative expression.
