Book Description
The application of two-path optical pyrometry to measurement of plasma jet temperature was studied from both theoretical and practical aspects. A pyrometer was constructed with its detection system consisting of a selected 1P21 photomultiplier associated with an electronic filter tuned to 1 c. Comparison between the unknown source and a calibrated filament is made at this frequency which is chosen to give optimum signal-to-noise ratio. The transparency of high temperature plasma necessitates the use of an opacifier if the two-path technique is to be employed with any accuracy. The use of sodium as a non-grey temperature indicating probe was investigated. The measurememt of integral radiancy is made almost monochromatic by passage through a narrow cut interference filter centered on 5892 angstroms, having a halfwidth of 7.5 angstroms. This enables the sodium D line doublet to be selected uniquely but renders the Beer's law expression inapplicable unless the shape of the emission line is known. The theories of spectral line broadening suggested the use of a theory by Lindholm to give this data and it was applied to the interpretation of the pyrometer readings. (Author).

Book Description
A literature study was made of methods for measuring temperatures of hot gases and plasmas, with emphasis on evaluation of non-spectroscopic techniques. For application to measurements on air stabilized plasma jets at temperatures to 8000 K and in the pressure range from 0.01 to 10 atmospheres, an optical technique was chosen, modified for fast response by use of a multiplier phototube as the receiver. The technique involves display on a cathode ray oscilloscope of signals alternately representing a single path and a double path (by means of a mirror) of the image of a portion of the plasma jet, the alternation being at 13. Extension of the range of possible temperature measurement to as high as 10,000 K is possible by interposition between the target and the pyrometer filament of neutral density glass filters, each having a transmissivity of about 4.5%. (Author).

Book Description
A photoelectric pyrometer has been designed and used to measure the temperature of a one atmosphere argon plasma jet over the range 4000K - 8500K. The jet which was virtually transparent normally was partially opacified with sodium, a non-gray temperature probe, and temperature measurements were based on the application of a non-gray/gray brightness matching theory to a modified two-path optical temperature measuring technique. The pyrometer was designed to detect uniquely the spectral radiation from the added sodium and to match the brightness of this radiation with that of gray radiation, from a calibrated filament. The brightnesses were matched at one cycle-second and observed over the narrow waveband (8A) of an interference filter centered on the D-line doublet of sodium (5890/5896A). The measured temperatures agree to within 1.6% of the enthalpy temperatures calculated from an energy balance over the whole system. (Author).

Book Description
The demand of industry for new composite and functional materials with preset properties has led to increased investigations into processes which occur in plasma jets of complex chemical composition with an additive to disperse particles as well as at their interaction with hard surfaces under the conditions of superfast cooling of the particles which are in complex aggregation state. This Proceedings Volume contains the papers that were presented during the International Workshop ''High-Temperature Dust-Laden Jets in the Processes of Treatment of Powder Materials'', held in Novosibirsk, USSR, 6--8 September 1988. The scope of the Workshop incorporated the following topics: -- Modelling of the processes of interphase momentum, heat and mass transfer in dust-laden plasma jets as well as interaction between the particles which are in complex aggregation state and the base. -- Diagnostics of the parameters of gas disperse phases in high-temperature dust-laden flows. -- Processes of the formation of plasma sprayed coatings. -- Processes of treatment and production of powder materials.

Book Description
Several spectrographic methods for temperature measurement were investigated and their results compared. These include relative-intensity measurements of some atomic spectral lines and measurements on the rotational fine structure of a cyanogen band and on the profile of hydrogen lines. The latter gave the most reliable results, but cannot be used below 9800 degrees K. The lower temperature range was not investigated in detail, but a method employing the relative intensities of the argon lines at 4300A and 4259A appears to be promising for measurement of temperatures in the range 3000 degrees K to 9000 degrees K.

Book Description
Spectrographic temperature measurement of an argon plasmajet have been attempted. Methods used in this preliminary study were: stark broadening of hydrogen lines, and relative intensities of argon lines. Results of these experiments are given, along with plans for further spectrographic studies.
