Book Description
Why haven't we North American biblical scholars done such a systematic study of the words for oppression in the Bible? If the answer is that we who possess the critical skills are not ourselves oppressed or identified with communities of the oppressed, then it becomes imperative that we listen all the more carefully to these voices from the South. -- Walter Wink, Professor Emeritus of Biblical Interpretation, Auburn Theological Seminary, New York This book is a welcome addition to a growing body of evidence that the Bible is a book about social justice for the oppressed of the land and that this indeed is the good news. -- Marie Augusta Neal, SND de Namur, author of A Socio-Theology of Letting Go Elsa Tamez's book attracts our attention, not only for wrestling with a major biblical theme but also for keeping us in continuous contact with the text of the Bible. -- Carroll Stuhlmueller, CP, general editor of The Collegeville Pastoral Dictionary of Biblical Theology A careful and creative interdisciplinary study in biblical theology, Old Testament, and social ethics. Elsa Tamez's work has contributed to the church in Latin America and is now available as a readable, important resource for the English-speaking church. -- Jane Cary Peck and Carole Fontaine, Andover Newton Theological School Writing from a perspective of those oppressed by poverty and sexism, Elsa Tamez has brought us a wealth of analysis of the biblical understanding of oppression. -- Letty M. Russell, Professor Emeritus, Yale Divinity School Elsa Tamez is the author of 'Through Her Eyes' (Wipf & Stock reprint, 2006), 'Jesus and Courageous Women' (2001), and coeditor of 'The Discourse of Human Dignity' (2003).

Book Description
This edited collection brings together essays that explore personal debts to government. Intensive collection efforts by governments in need of revenue often cause hardship, whether it is the poor in the United States going to jail because of unpaid fines, low-income English people being evicted because they paid their council taxes but could then not pay their rent, or poor former students having tax refunds or social benefits taken by the government when they have defaulted on their student loans. Student loans, fines and fees arising from the justice system, benefit overpayments and unpaid taxes have all ballooned in the past decade, but no other volume comprehensively addresses the various ways in which governments have become privileged creditors, using their power to collect debts owed to them by their citizens. With each essay emphasizing a particular kind of debt to government, the book focuses on what happens when citizens cannot pay the debts they owe to their governments. Contributors offer pragmatic options to facilitate a movement to soften the stance of governments toward those who owe them money. The insights in this collection will be of relevance to students and academics in criminology, sociology, public policy, and economics, as well as policymakers and government officials interested in effecting change in this area.

Book Description
These studies originally appeared in Spanish and in Portuguese in the journal of biblical interpretation known as RIBLA ("Revista de Interpretacion Biblica Latinoamericana"), a joint project of various publishing houses throughout Latin America. The first set of studies deals with the problem of debt; the second set addresses the problem of sacrifice; and the final set explores the spirituality of resistance that the authors find manifest throughout the Bible.

Book Description
Packing his case with moral argument and relevant facts, Angelo Corlett offers the most comprehensive defense to date in favor of reparations for African Americans and American Indians. As Corlett see it, the heirs of oppression are both the descendants of the oppressors and the descendants of their victims. Corlett delves deeply into the philosophically related issues of collective responsibility, forgiveness and apology, and reparations as a human right in ways that no other book or article to date has done. He recommends specific policies and tests the basic arguments of this book with a lengthy chapter considering several objections to the line of reasoning grounding the project.
