Tricky Opossums
Author: Catherine Nichols
Publisher: Bearport Publishing
ISBN: 1597168041
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 24
Book Description
Opossums fool predators by pretending to be dead. If an enemy really needs convincing, the opossum will even blow bubbles of drool out of its nose or squirt a smelly green liquid from its rear! What animal would want to eat something so gross? These are just some of the fascinating facts kids will discover as they explore the world of these tricky creatures. Large, eye-popping photos and clear, grade-appropriate text engage emergent readers as they learn all about the unique and gross ways opossums protect themselves. A section in the back of the book profiles another animal that protects itself in a similar way, to help reinforce the concept of defense mechanisms.

Coexistence and Space Use of Raccoon, Striped Skunk, and Virginia Opossum in East Texas
Author: Kent Allen Fricke
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 474
Book Description
Raccoons (Procyon lotor), striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis), and Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) comprise a community of ecological generalists that coexist throughout their ranges in North America and utilize many of the same resources. These sympatric omnivores occur in a variety of habitats and can have significant impacts on the communities and ecosystems in which they occur, such as influencing avifaunal communities and hosting and transmitting diseases. Yet, relatively few studies have examined the spatial correlates that may allow their coexistence. Space-use patterns, including home range, habitat use, movements, and relative abundances can all be mechanisms by which these species might coexist. A study with three main components was conducted to determine space-use patterns of raccoon, striped skunk, and Virginia opossum on a 1,200 ha study site in Angelina County, Texas, USA, from December 2008-May 2010. The study site is surrounded by two channels of the Neches River and is dominated by mature bottomland hardwood forest and mature, thinned loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda) stands. The site is managed for timber production and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) hunting.
