The Russian River sockeye salmon escapement assessment project, which began in 1962, is one of the oldest stock assessment projects in the state of Alaska. During 2023–2026, the Russian River weir will be operated annually from early June through the first 7 to 10 days of September. All species of fish seen passing the weir through the fish chute will be enumerated daily. Sampling of sockeye salmon for age, sex, and length data will be done each Friday, and the sample size each week will be based on the previous week’s fish passage. Sockeye and Chinook salmon spawning downstream of the Russian River weir to the confluence of the Russian River and the Kenai River will be assessed by a foot survey during the fourth week of August. Multiple foot surveys will also be conducted from mid-May to 10 June to assess spawning rainbow trout.

Objectives of this study are to estimate the spawning escapement and run timing of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in an index area of the Gulkana River using counting tower methodology. In addition, sockeye salmon O. nerka escapement at the tower site will be estimated during the period of tower operation. The number of Chinook salmon and sockeye salmon passing the tower site will be estimated by visually counting fish as they pass 2 counting towers located approximately 2.5 km upstream of the confluence of the West Fork. Ten-minute visual counts will be conducted for each river channel every hour, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The abundance estimates will be stratified by day. Because counts are planned for all hours, daily estimates of abundance will be a single-stage direct expansion from the 10 min counting periods. The count schedule will start prior to the beginning of the Chinook salmon run, approximately 3 June, and continue until after 10 August when the run is complete. Tower operations may be extended to a later date to enumerate more of the sockeye salmon run if funding is provided by Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corporation.

The purpose of this project is to determine Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha harvest by sport anglers on the Situk River and the age components of that harvest. Additionally, sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka harvest will be determined and various methods of angler use patterns for both species will be recorded. Creel sampling techniques will be used to collect catch, harvest, effort and biological information from the Situk River for this purpose. This information is used to manage for the Chinook salmon biological escapement goal for the Situk River as per the Situk-Ahrnklin and Lost River Chinook salmon Management Plan, along with achieving the Situk River sockeye salmon biological escapement goal. Inriver abundance for both Situk River Chinook and sockeye is obtained from another project with a fish weir, and escapement is calculated by subtracting the above-weir sport harvest estimate of this project from that weir count. Additionally, the Chinook salmon age component information of the harvest gathered here is required for yearly stock assessment models to predict the following years run and set preseason management regulations.
