Book Description
Excerpt from On Yachts and Yacht Handling But this method of handling a subject is apt to breed dogmatism, especially as the reader is unable to question or deny the statements made until they have been chilled into ink. Sooyou will find in many of my chapters that Iam exceedingly dogmatic. It is unintentional, simply being a manifestation of the spirit peculiar to this style of addressing an audience - one that must hear but cannot answer. Therefore let me warn you to question all my statements, and to accept only those that harmonize with your own conclusions, after you have carefully thought them over. Those that you cannot reconcile to your own knowledge and experience, lay on one side to be tried out at a future day. Book Description
Excerpt from Canoeing, Sailing and Motor Boating: Practical Boat Building and Handling With most men whose homes are beside salt water, river or lake, the desire to get a oat and navigate their own craft is ineradicable. Begin ning with the boyhood batteau, we grow to the youth '3 catboat or dory, and then to manhood 's yacht or motor boat. The sea-faring blood seems well distributed throughout the country, as wit ness the army of inland bluejackets trained at the Great Lakes and other stations far from our sea coasts. Once a sailorman, always a sailorman, - even if the craft is of the most modest pretensions. And we do not outgrow our old loves. At forty we get as much fun out of the tiny canoe as from the expensive power cruiser, and to those of us whose purse (and we are many) does not permit anything resembling a fancy yacht, the craving to venture forth on the waters is well satisfied by a cruising canoe, a small sailboat, or a twenty-foot power boat, home-built, perhaps from knockdown frames. Book Description
Excerpt from Ready About, or Sailing the Boat As indicated in the sub-title, Sailing the Boat is one of the principal features of the book. This is an art that cannot be mastered by simply learning the theory. Nothing but abundant practice can make a competent boatman. Fifty years ago, the writer, how ever, would have deemed it very fortunate if he could have obtained from a book, even such instruction as he has endeavored to impart. He has by no means ex hansted the subject, though whatever more is to be learned will almost come of itself with experience; The author has learned in fifty years that there is always something more to learn; and the handling of a yacht has come to be almost high art in the amount of time, study, and enthusiasm bestowed upon the subject in recent years. Book Description
Excerpt from Yachts and Yachting: With Over One Hundred and Ten Illustrations The history Of the New York Yacht Club, for the first sixteen yea1s Of its ex istence at least, is practically the history Of American yachting. For the first five years it was the only yacht club in the United States. The Southern yacht club, with its head-quarters at New Orleans and its racing course on Lake Ponchartrain, was the second club organized, but it was purely a local organization; its yachts were small open boats, and it had no real national influence, The third club 'was the Neptune, at the'highlands, organized in 1850, one year later than the Southern; but it was rather -a'fishing than a yachting club, and like the Southern, its boats were for the most part open centerboards Of small size. It-may have had an occasional race on the Shrewsbury River, but it was simply a summer. Organi zation, and, except in name, had none of the character istics of a regular yachting organization. The Carolina club, with head-quarters at Wilmington (if I am not mistaken), North Carolina, ranks fourth in point Of age, but was Of no importance ex cept, perhaps, locally. It was organized in 1854. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sailing Boat: A Treatise on Sailing Boats and Small Yachts, Their Varieties of Type, Sails, Rig, Etc The first edition of this work was published in the year 1854: that and two subsequent editions were readily disposed of; the fourth, which was published more than thirty years ago, was somewhat hurriedly prepared. The delay since that long period in the preparation of a fifth edition is attributable, mainly, to the fact that the Authors time was almost entirely devoted to his professional occupations, consequently he was unable to give that care and attention to the subject of 'The Sailing Boat' which a new edition seemed to require. The leisure at his command during the last five or six years has given him the opportunity he sought, and enabled him, in this new and much enlarged edition, to make the work more complete and up to date.
