Book Description
This volume presents twelve in-depth case studies that critically examine the ways in which historical linguistics and language change interact with ideology. These varying interactions have been present since the birth of historical-comparative linguistics as a field of study. Work in historical linguistics may be appropriated or rejected for ideological reasons, most notably in the debates surrounding the Indo-European homeland; it can also by influenced by ideological biases, as in the 'alternative' histories that have been proposed for Moldovan and Maltese. The development of linguistically-defined nation states may itself fuel linguistic change, for instance through the suppression of minority languages or the division of existing languages to mirror political divisions, as occurred in the Balkans; or it may lead to the formulation of pseudo-histories designed to give a nation a more prestigious past. The book will be of interest not only to historical linguists but also to anthropologists, historians, and all those interested in language policy.

Book Description
Excerpt from On the Science of Language and Its Study: With Special Regard to South Africa Ladies and Gentlemen, - The Committee of Management of the South African Public Library has . conferred upon me the honour of taking the chair at its fifty-third annual meeting, and in accordance with the traditions of this Institution, of addressing you on some scientific or literary subject Although born under the English flag, my lot in early life unfortunately did not put me in the position of enjoying the literary treasures which during six centuries had been accumulated by your poets, historians and philosophers. When far away from my native land, I became acquainted with the English language and literature, in that country where your Beowulf, Shakespeare and Byron found their greatest and most eloquent interpreters, their most competent translators and their most enthusiastic admirers. In Germany I had learnt to understand English and to enjoy an English book; but it is still a great step from reading to writing a language. And when eleven years ago I came back to my native shores, I at once proceeded to the Transgaripian territories, where, during my seven years of wanderings, I never had an opportunity of cultivating English conversation and style. And it is only since my return from there, four years ago, that I have been able to devote myself to a more careful practice of the English idiom. Book Description
This volume brings together a diverse range of scholars to address important philosophical and interdisciplinary questions in the study of language. Linguistics throughout history has been a conduit to the study of the mind, brain, societal structure, literature and history itself. The epistemic and methodological transfer between the sciences and humanities in regards to linguistics has often been documented, but the underlying philosophical issues have not always been adequately addressed. With 15 original and interdisciplinary chapters, this volume therefore tackles vital questions relating to the philosophy, history, and theoretical interplay between the study of language and fields as varied as logic, physics, biology, classical philology and neuroscience. With a four part structure, questions of the mathematical foundations of linguistics, links to the natural sciences, cognitive implications and historical connections, take centre stage throughout the volume. The final chapters present research related to the linguistic connections between history, philosophy and the humanities more broadly. Advancing new avenues of research, this volume is exemplary in its treatment of diachronic and cross-disciplinary interaction, and will be of interest to all scholars interested in the study of language.
