Book Description
Excerpt from Poultry Breeding and Management The remarkable development of poultry culture during the past two decades is one of the outstanding features of American agriculture. Twenty years ago the possibilities of poultry-keeping as an industry were scarcely dreamed of. While it does not yet receive the consideration it deserves - far from it - nevertheless it has made immense gains both in popular recognition and in production. This has been brought about by a better realization of the pro ductive value of the hen. The idea of fuss and feathers, long associated with the keeping of fowls, has gradually given way to the idea of a poultry industry whose first and only business, as an industry, is the production of eggs and meat. Book Description
Excerpt from Poultry Breeding: A Complete Guide for Keepers of Poultry Animal feeds - The hen is a meat-eater. A bul letin by Prof. James Dryden, of the Oregon Experiment Station, gives the following concerning animal feeds for fowls: Animal feed of some kind is necessary to fowls to maintain their health and vigor and make them pro ductive of either meat or eggs. A knowledge of this has done more to increase the poultryman's profits than any other thing in poultry feeding. The scarcity of eggs in winter is largely due to lack of animal feed. The fact that when chickens are given the liberty of fields in sum mer they find feed in the form of bugs, angleworms, grasshoppers and other insects, escapes the notice of the farmer, and in the winter he does not see the necessity of feeding it. In most parts of the country in winter chickens are unable to obtain animal feed in the fields, especially in sections where snow covers the ground. In western Oregon, with its mild winters, they find many angleworms, especially during the rainy season. But in most sections, if not in all, fowls must be liberally fed with animal feed for best results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Breeding Poultry for Exhibition No doubt the reason that brought forth the condemnation of breeding young stock together, and the advice that they should always be paired with birds older than themselves, was that young birds were indiscriminately mated together. But if the young stock have been properly reared, have had no check from disease or insects, and are well-grown birds, we would just as soon breed from them as we would if they were mated to birds older than them selves. We mention this not because we would advocate the breeding of young stock together as the general rule to follow, but to show that if occasion arises when it is necessary to either breed in this way or not to breed at all, we should not have the slightest hesitation in so mating.
