Book Description
Excerpt from On Sects in Medicine In the feudal times, as is well known, it was not uncommon for knights who had fought for their ladies, to commit the care of their wounds to the objects of their worship, who took good care always to be possessed of ointments of great repute, as well as charms and amulets of supposed healing virtue, in addition to their own tenderness and personal attractions. Thus armed with potent balms and stimulants, they always rivaled their aged mothers and ordi nary nurses; and at times even the priests and doctors, not only in the assiduity of their attentions, but in their real suc cess. In the time of Queen Elizabeth, however, all this was changed; for, when sundry poor and probably ugly old women, applied to the Royal College of Physicians and Sur geons for permission to employ their small talent in minister ing to the cure of diseases and wounds by means of certain herbs and simples; in the application whereof they boastfully stated that God himself had given them special knowledge; this was firmly and peremptorily refused, on the grounds. Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical Profession, the Medical Sects, the Law: The Address in Medicine, Yale University, 1889 The American medical profession has in it a multitude of rightly educated physicians, but it comprises also an enormous number who are but partially educated in their profession. Of all places in the universe, - ih America there are doctors and doctors. The American medical profession cannot be in any degree held responsible for its condition, not merely because it has no power over its own members after they have entered, but especially because it has no control over the gates through which men flock into it. In some States, the law allows any one to set up as a doctor who wishes whilst where there is any law regulating the mode of entrance into the profession, - such law usually puts the power of granting the right to practice into the hands of the medical college. To be sure the medical college is nominally required to examine the candidates and to shut out the unfit. Almost any small group of physicians can. Book Description
Excerpt from Study of the Sects The manifold nature of the subject has involved an amount of labor not likely to be appreciated by any one who has not attempted something of the same kind. Yet the necessity of giving to it only the fragments of a busy life may well have left it lacking in unity as well as mistaken on single points. As I review the extent of ground covered and the number of questions answered which have puzzled the saints and the ages, I fear to draw upon myself the latter half of the judgment pronounced upon Whewell, that science was his forte, and omnisci ence his foible. Still more do I tremble at my temerity in daring to state the belief of Unitarians, Which I have done against my wish and at the request of the Society which publishes the manual. Yet some such book seems to be needed, - is certainly demanded; and this may serve till a better one takes its place. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Medicine, Founded on the Structure and Functions of the Animal Organism Philosophers were divided into sects, enrolled under the banner of a schpol, or enlisted as the followers of a chief, whose name they proudly bore, whose doctrines they blindly espoused, whose volumes they consulted as oracles, in which truth alone could be discovered, neglecting its only source, the great volume of na ture. In this light were regarded Pythagoras and Zeno, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, amongst the ancients; Descartes, Leibnitz, and Newton, of the moderns. Book Description
Excerpt from English Sects: An Historical Handbook Orthodox standard of belief to the stand point of anti-christian or frankly pagan teaching. Clearly, there is no common measure of all these various creeds and principles, but there is in the case of those sects which, whether they possess a for mulated creed or not, do in fact accept, if not the wording, at least the contents of the Nicene symbol. The subject of our diverse beliefs is usually treated in bulky and learned books which only the special student will consult. It is hoped that the small and handy size of this volume will bring to the notice of the general reader the leading facts which illustrate the unhappily divided state of English Christianity. Still more is it hoped that the reading of its pages will kindle a desire to help in removing the barriers which, for whatever cause, have been erected between sect and sect, be tween the sects and the Church. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Heresies: Historically Considered: A Series of Critical Essays on the Origin and Evolution of Sectarian Medicine, Embracing a Special Sketch and Review of Homoeopathy, Past and Present I have presented the principles of this school fairly, quoting the exact words of its founders, at the expense of some repetition, in order that I might not be accused of misrepresentation. The discussion of these principles has been conducted from a scientific standpoint, and without ridicule, thus showing of what homoeopathy consisted originally; and by quotations from the current literature of the school. Book Description
Excerpt from Scientific Features of Modern Medicine AN appointment to the lectureship founded by an appro ciative and generous patron of science, the late Morris K. J esup, Esq., has given me an Opportunity to present some of the striking features of modern medicine which illustrate its genuinely scientific character, its great change from the medi cine of the past, and its hopeful outlook for the future. Obviously no attempt could here be made to survey its whole field; but I have endeavored, through a consideration of selected topics, to depict its spirit. Human beings may be divided into those who do, and those who do not, believe in the efficiency of medicine. The relative number of non believers has always been small, and is doubtless much less now than in the days of the Greeks and of Moliere, but their sentiments have ever been loudly proclaimed. It is hoped that these pages may be read by both classes. They may perchance help to fortify the believers, and, if not actually to convert the dissenters, at least to make their doubts appear less rational. The labors of a learned profession can easily be belittled by those who are less learned. I shall be gratified if what I have here written shall be instrumental in inducing laymen to study the human body and appreciate what men of medicine are now doing to maintain health and to prevent, diagnose, treat, and cure disease. When laymen do this, the influence of medical cults and healing sects is sure to decline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Plea for Eclectic Medicine The necessity of reform in medicine, politics or religion, is never broached by the established or ruling class. The slightest innovations upon time honored customs, is met by the cry of heresy - hence, chronic evils in the body politic, remain so long uncorrected. The dearest liberties of the people have never been obtained except they were wrested from the grasp of tyrants. The free and restless spirit which unlocked the monkish Cloisters of the middle ages, giving breadth and scope to conscience, lib erty and learning, at length gave birth to Eclecticism, in religion. Law and medicine. But these strides in the way of professional freedom and ad vancement, were not made without struggles, conflicts and revolutions. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Education in the United States and Canada: A Report to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching The attitude of the Foundation is that all colleges and universities, whether sup ported by taxation or by private endowment, are in truth public service corporations, and that the public is entitled to know the facts concerning their administration and development, whether those facts pertain to the financial or to the educational side. We believe, therefore, that in seeking to present an accurate and fair statement of the work and the facilities of the medical schools of this country, we are serving the best possible purpose which such an agency as the Foundation can serve; and, further more, that only by such publicity can the true interests of education and of the universities themselves be subserved. In such a reasonable publicity lies the hope for progress in medical education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
