Book Description
Excerpt from On Intelligence, Vol. 1 Such is the method it has been attempted to follow in this work. In the first part, the elements of knowledge have been determined; by consecutive reductions we have arrived at the most simple elements, and have passed from these to the physiological changes which are the condition of their origin. In the second part, we have first described the mech anism and general effect of their combination then, applying the law we have discovered, we have examined the elements, formation, certitude, and range of the principal kinds of our knowledge, from that of individual things to that of general things, from the most special perceptions, previsions, and recollections, up to the most universal judgments and axioms. In these inquiries, Consciousness, our principal instrument, is not sufficient in its ordinary state; it is no more sufficient in psychological inquiries than the naked eye in Optical in quiries. For its range is not great; its illusions are many and invincible; it is necessary continually to beware of it; to test and correct its evidence, nearly always to assist it, to present objects to it in a brighter light, to magnify them and construct for its use a kind of microscope or telescope; at all events, to arrange the surroundings of the object, to give it the necessary relief by means of contrasts, or to find beside it indications of its presence, indications plainer than it is, and indirectly pointing out its nature. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Psychology, Vol. 1 While these analytical parts deal. With the phenomena of intelligence subjectively, and, as a necessary consequence, are confined to human intelligence; the synthetical parts deal with the phenomena of intelligence objectively, and so include not human intelligence only, but intelligence under every form. The General Synthesis, setting out with an abstract state ment of the relation subsisting between every living organ ism and the external world, and arguing that all vital actions whatever, mental and bodily, must be expressible in terms of this relation; proceeds to formulate, in such terms, the successive phases of progressing Life, considered apart from our conventional classifications of them. Book Description
Excerpt from Monthly Information Bulletin, Vol. 1: January-December 1925 The material for the Bulletin is largely derived from service sources and its interest and value are correspondingly dependent upon the number and character of the reports received by the Office of Naval Intelligence from our own officers. In this connection the observations of officers afloat are of great value, particularly if the reports rendered are drawn up in accordance with existing intelligence instructions. Book Description
Excerpt from Animal Intelligence When I first began to collect materials for this work it was my intention to divide the book into two parts. Of these I intended the first to be concerned only with the facts of animal intelligence, while the second was to have treated of these facts in their relation to the theory of Descent. Finding, however, as I proceeded, that the material was too considerable in amount to admit of being comprised within the limits of a single volume, 1 have made arrangements with the publishers of the 'international Scientific Series to bring out the second division of the work as a separate treatise, under the title 'mental Evolution.' This treatise I hope to get ready for press within a year or two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Catholic Cabinet, and Chronicle of Religious Intelligence, 1843, Vol. 1: Containing Original and Selected Articles Ive have another inducement for beginning our labors with the sketch on which we are about to enter. Many of our readers are doubtless as well, if not better acquainted with the present state and prospects of Catholicism than we can pretend to be; and for such persons our present inquiry might be spared: but there are many who may patronize the cabinet, and who, probabl have very imperfect, if not erroneous ideas on the actual extent to which the Catholic religion is professed. To this class of persons, in a special manner, we wish to be understood as addressing ourselves on the present 000351011. Book Description
Excerpt from Intelligence Tests and Their Use, Vol. 1 In 1897 Dr. J. M. Rice published in the Forum two articles giving an account of his investigations of the spelling abilities of school children in the United States. The Simple tests that he employed were the first definite attempt made on an extensive scale to measure any aspect of school achievement. For this reason Dr. Rice has been called the father of educational measurements. Since this early attempt, the movement to measure school attain ments in a fundamental and scientific way has grown to astonishing proportions. The growth and practical application of intelligence tests has paralleled that of tests to measure school products. The two move ments have gone hand in hand, as indeed, they should. Both must be used in conjunction if we wish to know the real facts about actual achievement of pupils and the efficiency of a teacher, a room, a building, or a school system.
