Excerpt from Old English Doorways: A Series of Historical Examples From Tudor Times to the End of the XVIII Century The study of the Doorway as a feature of English Architecture during the Renaissance is of so much interest that surely no apology is necessary for the issue of the present volume, which presents a representative series of examples ranging over the whole of this period. The subjects chosen include some of the finest examples of the many types of doorways to be found in this country, dating from the sixteenth century to the time of the brothers Adam; a number of the plates being devoted to the illustration of different treatment of the shell porch, the most beautiful of the many varieties of eighteenth century wooden doorheads. The excellence of Mr. Davie's photographic work has already been demonstrated, and although in this case the nature of the subjects minimises the scope for artistic rendering, this has evidently not been lost sight of, for the various examples have invariably been taken by him from the most advantageous point of view.
