Chojun Miyagi, a desciple of Grandmaster Higashionna from Naha Village in Okinawa, developed Okinawan goju-ryu karate in the early 1900s using the skills he learned from Higashionna and those refined as a police captain and training officer for the Okinawan Police Academy. After Miyagi died in 1953, his legacy of goju-ryu karate at the honbu headquarters was passed to his senior student Eiichi Miyazato-who, with other senior students, continues to teach and spread this art around the world.
