Book Description
Excerpt from Ohio's Forests and Wood-Using Industries The estimates of forest area, timber volume, and growth reported here are higher than previous estimates indicated. Moreover, the statistics that follow show that Ohio timber stands are now. Growing faster than they are being cut. The differences are partly due to inclusion of more lightly forested areas in the recent survey. Standards of merchantability have changed to include material that would not have been harvested 10 or 15 years ago. The differences also reflect the tree planting and the actual increase in timber volume during the period. Because of the changing standards this increase cannot be accurately measured. Book Description
To identify changes in the structure, size, and wood raw material inputs of the primary wood processing industry in Ohio, the Ohio Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service conduct a periodic survey of this sector. The current assessment of the state of the primary wood products industry in Ohio is based on information collected for the period 2003 through 2006. Average annual roundwood removals from Ohio forest lands are estimated to have been 91.2 million cubic feet during the period, virtually the same as the harvest level found by the previous survey in 1989. This volume includes 5.2 million cubic feet of saw logs and veneer logs exported to other countries, 62.5 million cubic feet of logs for domestic use, 23.5 million cubic feet of pulpwood. Of the log volume harvested from Ohio forests that was consumed domestically, 96.5 percent was processed by the State's 197 sawmills while veneer mills processed only 0.7 percent. Of the pulpwood volume, 74 percent was consumed by the pulp and paper industry and the remaining 26 percent was consumed by the engineered wood products industry, predominantly by panel (oriented strand board) manufacturers. Considering saw log transfers among states (excluding international shipments), the ratio of imports to exports for Ohio is 5.6 to 1, indicating that Ohio remains a net importer of saw logs.

Book Description
Excerpt from Wood-Using Industries of Ohio With her many rail and water transportation facilities, and wub her vast resources of soil, forests, coal, oil, gas, iron, stone and clay, Ohio stands high as a manufacturing State. In 1910 the value added to the raw material by the varied manufactures of the State amounted to considerably more than For the same period the Bureau of the Census report shows that the sale of farm products reached a value of and that the minerals produced, exclusive of clay products, an estimated value of $159, 000, 000. Manufacturing, therefore, is preeminently Ohio's leading industry. The present report deals with a single class of factories, those manufacturing commodities from wood. They form one of the most important divisions of Ohio's enterprises, and nearly every State in the Union as well as many foreign countries send some portion of their forest material to Ohio for utilization in manu facture. The commodities turned out by these wood-using factories, together with the value of the rough forest products like lumber, shingles, cross-ties, etc., in 1909, amounted to nearly Compared with the value of farm products and the mineral resources, the part the forests and their related industries are taking in the commercial development of Ohio is thus clearly indicated.
