Book Description
Based on the popular Artech House classic, Digital Communication Systems Engineering with Software-Defined Radio, this book provides a practical approach to quickly learning the software-defined radio (SDR) concepts needed for work in the field. This up-to-date volume guides readers on how to quickly prototype wireless designs using SDR for real-world testing and experimentation. This book explores advanced wireless communication techniques such as OFDM, LTE, WLA, and hardware targeting. Readers will gain an understanding of the core concepts behind wireless hardware, such as the radio frequency front-end, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, as well as various processing technologies. Moreover, this volume includes chapters on timing estimation, matched filtering, frame synchronization message decoding, and source coding. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is explained and details about HDL code generation and deployment are provided. The book concludes with coverage of the WLAN toolbox with OFDM beacon reception and the LTE toolbox with downlink reception. Multiple case studies are provided throughout the book. Both MATLAB and Simulink source code are included to assist readers with their projects in the field.

Book Description
This book addresses Software-Defined Radio (SDR) baseband processing from the computer architecture point of view, providing a detailed exploration of different computing platforms by classifying different approaches, highlighting the common features related to SDR requirements and by showing pros and cons of the proposed solutions. It covers architectures exploiting parallelism by extending single-processor environment (such as VLIW, SIMD, TTA approaches), multi-core platforms distributing the computation to either a homogeneous array or a set of specialized heterogeneous processors, and architectures exploiting fine-grained, coarse-grained, or hybrid reconfigurability.

Book Description
This thesis describes a real-time, DSP implementation of a baseband OFDM system, which includes interleaving and forward error correction algorithms. Software modules representing discrete system blocks are created and sequentially called upon as needed. The software reconfigurable system is developed on a Texas Instruments TMS320C6201 Evaluation Module, which is based on a fixed-point processor. Different combinations of arithmetic precision and speed for the fixed-point operations were explored. The decisive combination was used to evaluate the accuracy of the system by plotting bit-error curves against an equivalent floating-point model. System efficiency is employed from the design stage through the use of Look-Up tables as well as cyclic shift registers. Upon implementation, the system is built using settings optimized for speed. In addition, memory management is used to ensure that critical instructions are kept on the fast on-chip memory while different access times for retrieving data on external memory were evaluated for best results. Finally, each software module is profiled to investigate and remove unnecessary latency issues. Processing efficiency is monitored by recording throughput results, which are used to calculate maximum bit-rates. Using these results, estimations are made for bit-rates achievable by higher performance processors. These estimations demonstrate that a highly flexible DSP platform can ultimately meet speed and flexibility requirements for Software Defined Radios.

Book Description
Software Defined Radio makes wireless communications easier, more efficient, and more reliable. This book bridges the gap between academic research and practical implementation. When beginning a project, practicing engineers, technical managers, and graduate students can save countless hours by considering the concepts presented in these pages. The author covers the myriad options and trade-offs available when selecting an appropriate hardware architecture. As demonstrated here, the choice between hardware- and software-centric architecture can mean the difference between meeting an aggressive schedule and bogging down in endless design iterations. Because of the author’s experience overseeing dozens of failed and successful developments, he is able to present many real-life examples. Some of the key concepts covered are: Choosing the right architecture for the market – laboratory, military, or commercial, Hardware platforms – FPGAs, GPPs, specialized and hybrid devices, Standardization efforts to ensure interoperability and portabilitym State-of-the-art components for radio frequency, mixed-signal, and baseband processing. The text requires only minimal knowledge of wireless communications; whenever possible, qualitative arguments are used instead of equations. An appendix provides a quick overview of wireless communications and introduces most of the concepts the readers will need to take advantage of the material. An essential introduction to SDR, this book is sure to be an invaluable addition to any technical bookshelf.

Book Description
Green Software De?ned Radios, the title of this book may have originated from a lackofinspiration, andthecombinationofhardwork, jetlag, anddrinkinggreentea. The message we want to convey however, is that SDRs are a promising technology for the future, providing they are designed for ef?cient usage of scarce resources: energy and spectrum. In the last years, the R&D teams focusing on wireless c- munication (around the world and at IMEC speci?cally), have realized great bre- throughs. It is our honor, building on this knowledge, to bring a comprehensive overview of the essential technologies. We are grateful that Springer is willing to publish in their collection on radio technologies, a book on green SDRs, a weird species still today, yet maybe the baseline for the day after tomorrow. Dear reader, we wish that you ?nd in the following pages, including the references, some int- esting insights, and that this book may live more or less up to your expectations (and hopefully more than less). Thisbook’sclosingstatesthatthequestforGreenSDRshasnotended, thisisjust the beginning. Concerning this book however, we are happy that today the opposite is true. We want to acknowledge our colleagues at IMEC for their great scienti?c contribution, and even more for the enjoyable cooperation.

Book Description
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems are widely used in the standards for digital audio/video broadcasting, WiFi and WiMax. Being a frequency-domain approach to communications, OFDM has important advantages in dealing with the frequency-selective nature of high data rate wireless communication channels. As the needs for operating with higher data rates become more pressing, OFDM systems have emerged as an effective physical-layer solution. This short monograph is intended as a tutorial which highlights the deleterious aspects of the wireless channel and presents why OFDM is a good choice as a modulation that can transmit at high data rates. The system-level approach we shall pursue will also point out the disadvantages of OFDM systems especially in the context of peak to average ratio, and carrier frequency synchronization. Finally, simulation of OFDM systems will be given due prominence. Simple MATLAB programs are provided for bit error rate simulation using a discrete-time OFDM representation. Software is also provided to simulate the effects of inter-block-interference, inter-carrier-interference and signal clipping on the error rate performance. Different components of the OFDM system are described, and detailed implementation notes are provided for the programs. The program can be downloaded here.
