Survey of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Executed in the Years 1842 and 1843, with the Intent of Establishing a Communication Between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and Under the Superintendence of a Scientific Commission, Appointed by the Projector Don José de Garay

Category : Tehuantepec Canal

Pages : 208
Book Description
Survey of the isthmus of Tehuantepec in the departments of Oaxaca and Veracruz, Mexico, undertaken by don José de Garay in 1842-1843, after being granted permission to build a canal through the isthmus by General Santa Ana, president of Mexico, in a memorial dated March 1, 1842. The commission was led by Gaetano Moro, along with engineers Trouplinière and González, secretary Pedro Garay, assistant Guido Mauro, and later, professor Manuel Robles of the Military College of Mexico. The party arrived in Tehuantepec and began work on the survey on May 28, 1842. The isthmus of Tehuantepec has traditionally been considered a favorable route for an interoceanic canal and an interoceanic railway, and has the advantage of being better situated to important trade routes than Panama. The isthmus of Panama however is considerably more narrow, which would make construction easier and less expensive. See the review of the Survey by Thomas Falconer in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London 14 (1844): 306-315.
