Book Description
These proceedings comprise invited and contributed papers presented at the 14th International Conference on X-Ray Lasers (ICXRL 2014). This conference is part of a continuing series dedicated to recent developments and applications of x-ray lasers and other coherent x-ray sources with attention to supporting technologies and instrumentation. New results in the generation of intense, coherent x-rays and progress toward practical devices and their applications in numerous fields are reported. Areas of research in plasma-based x-ray lasers, 4th generation accelerator-based sources and higher harmonic generation, and other x-ray generation schemes are covered. The scope of ICXRL 2014 included, but was not limited to: Laser-pumped X-ray lasers Discharge excitation and other X-ray laser pumping methods Injection/seeding of X-ray amplifiers New lasing transitions and novel X-ray laser schemes High Harmonic sources-Free-electron laser generation in the XUV and X-ray range Novel schemes for coherent XUV and X-ray generation XUV and X-ray optics and metrology-Driving laser technology Theory and modeling of X-ray gain medium and beam characteristics Applications of high brightness and ultrashort X-ray sources

Book Description
With the development of potent x-ray sources at many synchrotron laboratories worldwide, Compton scattering has become a standard tool for studying electron densities in materials. This book provides condensed matter and materials physicists with an authoritative, up-to-date, and very accessible account of the Compton scattering method, leading to a fundamental understanding of the electrical and magnetic properties of solid materials. The spectrum of Compton scattered x-rays is particularly sensitive to this behaviour and thus can be used as a direct probe and to test the predictions of theory. The current generation of synchrotron facilities allows this method to be readily exploited to study the ground state electron density in both elements and in complex compounds. It is important that those working in related fields, as well as the increasing number directly using the Compton method, have a comprehensive assessment of what is now possible and how to achieve it, in addition to a full understanding of its theoretical basis. This monograph is unique and timely, since little of what is described, was practicable a decade ago. The development of synchrotron radiation facilities has ensured that the technique described here will remain a powerful probe of electron charge and spin density for many years to come.

Book Description
We investigated the effect of inverse Compton scattering in mildly relativistic static and moving plasmas with low optical depth using Monte Carlo simulations, and calculated the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in the cosmic background radiation. Our semi-analytic method is based on a separation of photon diffusion in frequency and real space. We use Monte Carlo simulation to derive the intensity and frequency of the scattered photons for a monochromatic incoming radiation. The outgoing spectrum is determined by integrating over the spectrum of the incoming radiation using the intensity to determine the correct weight. This method makes it possible to study the emerging radiation as a function of frequency and direction. As a first application we have studied the effects of finite optical depth and gas infall on the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (not possible with the extended Kompaneets equation) and discuss the parameter range in which the Boltzmann equation and its expansions can be used. For high temperature clusters (k(sub B)T(sub e) greater than or approximately equal to 15 keV) relativistic corrections based on a fifth order expansion of the extended Kompaneets equation seriously underestimate the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect at high frequencies. The contribution from plasma infall is less important for reasonable velocities. We give a convenient analytical expression for the dependence of the cross-over frequency on temperature, optical depth, and gas infall speed. Optical depth effects are often more important than relativistic corrections, and should be taken into account for high-precision work, but are smaller than the typical kinematic effect from cluster radial velocities.

Book Description
This second edition contains corrections of misprints and errors found by the author, as well as those suggested during the Russian translation of the first printing. The Russian editors and translators who kindly supplied this material include V. E. CHERTOPRUD, A. G. DOROSHKEVICH, V. L. HOHLOVA, M. Yu. KHLOPOV, D. K. NADIOZHIN, L. M. ÜZERNOI, I. G. PERSIANTSEV, L. A. POKROVSKII, A. V. ZASOV, and Yu. K. ZEMTSOV. Supplemental references for the period 1974 to 1980 have also been added as appendix where they are included under the headings of general references and specific references for each chapter. Although specialized references come mainly from American journals, references to reviews and books are also included to help guide the reader to other sources. The author encourages suggestions for additions and corrections to possible future editions of this volume. KENNETH R. LANG Department of Physics, Tufts University Medford, Massachusetts January, 1980 Preface This book is meant to be a reference source for the fundamental formulae of astrophysics. Wherever possible, the original source of the material being pre sented is referenced, together with references to more recent modifications and applications. More accessible reprints and translations of the early papers are also referenced. In this way the reader is provided with the often ignored his torical context together with an orientation to the more recent literature.

Book Description
This book is meant to be a reference source for the fundamental formulae of astrophysics. Wherever possible, the original source of the material being pre sented is referenced, together with references to more recent modifications and applications. More accessible reprints and translations of the early papers are also referenced. In this way the reader is provided with the often ignored his torical context together with an orientation to the more recent literature. Any omission of a reference is, of course, not meant to reflect on the quality of its contents. In order to present a wide variety of concepts in one volume, a concise style is used and derivations are presented for only the simpler formulae. Ex tensive derivations and explanatory comments may be found in the original references or in the books listed in the selected bibliography which follows. Following the convention in astrophysics, the C. g. S. (centimeter-gram-second) system of units is used unless otherwise noted. To conserve space, the funda mental constants are not always defined, and unless otherwise noted the fol lowing symbols have the following meaning and value. Symbol Meaning Value 10 c Speed of light in vacuum 2. 997924562(11) x 10 cm S-l h=2nh Planck's constant 6. 626196(50) x 10 - 27 erg s Rationalized Planck's constant 1. 0545919(80) x 10- 27 erg s h=h/2n k Boltzmann's constant 1. 380622(59) x 10 - 16 erg K - 1 4.
