A new state with invariant mass near 2.32 GeV=c[sup 2] has been observed by the BABAR Collaboration in the inclusive D[sub s][sup +] [pi][sup 0] mass distribution using 91 fb[sup -1] of e[sup +]e[sup -] annihilation data taken at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy storage ring at energies near 10.6 GeV. The new state is narrow, with an observed width that is consistent with the experimental resolution. This narrow width combined with the quantum numbers of the final state imply that the decay is isospin-violating. The state has natural spin-parity, and its low mass suggests a J[sup P] = 0[sup +] assignment.

The authors study initial-state radiation events, ee− →?{sub ISR}?+?− J/?, with data collected with the BABAR detector. They observe an accumulation of events near 4.26 GeV/c2 in the invariant-mass spectrum of?+?− J/?. Fits of the mass spectrum indicate that a broad resonance with a mass of about 4.26 GeV/c2 is required to describe the observed structure. The presence of additional narrow resonances cannot be excluded. The fitted width of the broad resonance is 50 to 90 MeV/c2, depending on the fit hypothesis.

The measurement was done in the KEK-PS tunnel using an internal polyethylene thread target. The momentum bin size ranges from 5 to 18 MeV/c. Statistical uncertainty of the analyzing power is typically 0.5% per momentum bin. A small narrow structure has been observed at the incident proton momentum of 1.23 GeV/c. 2 refs., 4 figs.
