Book Description
CP violation is a well-established phenomenon in particle physics, but until 2001 it was only observed in kaons. In the last decade, several matter-antimatter asymmetries have been observed in neutral B mesons in line with the expectations of the Standard Model of the weak interaction. Direct CP violation is also expected in the decay rates of charged B+ mesons versus that of B- mesons, though the greatest effects are present in a decay that occurs just twice in 10 million decays. Such rarity requires huge samples to study and this is exactly what the LHC, and its dedicated B-physics experiment LHCb provide. This thesis presents an analysis of the first two years of LHCb data. The author describes the first observation of the rare decay, B- → DK-, D → π-K+ and the first observation of direct CP violation in this B decay. The work constitutes essential information on the experiment’s measurement of a fundamental parameter of the theory and stands as a benchmark against which subsequent analyses of this type will be compared.

Book Description
The authors present an updated search for direct CP violation in the decay B° --> Kpi−. Using 227 million [Upsilon](4S) --> B{bar B} decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy Ee− collider at SLAC, the authors observe a total signal yield of n(K-pi+) + n(K+pi−) = 1606 ± 51 decays and measure the asymmetry [n(K−pi+)-n(K+pi−)]/[n(K−pi+)+n(K+pi−)] = 0.133 ± 0.030(stat) ± 0.009(syst). This measurement establishes direct CP violation in the B° meson system at the level of 4.2 standard deviations.

Book Description
We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of[Upsilon](4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 million B[bar B] pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2[beta]= 0.59[+-] 0.14 (stat)[+-] 0.05 (syst) establishes CP violation in the B[sup 0] meson system. We also determine[lambda]= 0.93[+-] 0.09 (stat)[+-] 0.03 (syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

Book Description
This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book Description
We study the decay B− → DK*− using a sample of 379 x 106?(4S) → B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We perform a 'GLW' analysis where the D meson decays into either a CP-even (CP+) eigenstate (KK−,?+?−), CP-odd (CP- ) eigenstate (K{sub S}°?°, K{sub S}°?, K{sub S}°?) or a non-CP state (K−?+). We also analyze D meson decays into K+?− from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}° decay or doubly suppressed D° decay ('ADS' analysis). We measure observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle?: the partial-rate charge asymmetries A{sub CP±}, the ratios R{sub CP±} of the B-decay branching fractions in CP± and non-CP decay, the ratio R{sub ADS} of the charge-averaged branching fractions, and the charge asymmetry A{sub ADS} of the ADS decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.09 ± 0.13 ± 0.06, A{sub CP-} = -0.23 ± 0.21 ± 0.07, R{sub CP+} = 2.17 ± 0.35 ± 0.09, R{sub CP-} = 1.03 ± 0.27 ± 0.13, R{sub ADS} = 0.066 ± 0.031 ± 0.010, and A{sub ADS} = -0.34 {+-} 0.43 {+-} 0.16, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Combining all the measurements and using a frequentist approach yields the magnitude of the ratio between the Cabibbo-suppressed and favored amplitudes, r{sub B} = 0.31 with a one (two) sigma confidence level interval of [0.24, 0.38] ([0.17, 0.43]). The value r{sub B} = 0 is excluded at the 3.3 sigma level. A similar analysis excludes values of? in the intervals [0, 7]{sup o}, [55, 111]{sup o}, and [175, 180]{sup o} ([85, 99]{sup o}) at the one (two) sigma confidence level.

Book Description
The detection and the measurement of CP violation in the decays of B hadrons will require the accumulation of large numbers of B decays in particular exclusive modes. The potential of beauty hadroproduction experiments for obtaining these large data samples is examined in the context of various trigger and analysis strategies. The possibilities for doing such experiments at present hadron machines is compared with the potential for such experiments at the SSC. 3 refs., 3 figs., 4 tabs.
