Excerpt from Galatea, el Viaje al Parnaso y Obras Dramáticas de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra La ocupacion de escribir églogas en tiempo que en general la poesia anda tan desfavorecida, bien recelo que no será tenido por ejercicio tan loable que no sea necesario dar alguna particular satisfacion á los que siguiendo el diverso gusto de su inclinacion natural, todo lo que es diferente del estiman por trabajo y tiempo perdido. Mas pues á ninguno toca satis facer á ingenios que se encierran en términos tan limitados, solo quiero responder zi los que libres de pasion, con mayor fundamento se mueven á no admitir las diferencias de la poesia vulgar, creyendo que los que en esta edad tratan della, se mueven á publicar sus escritos con ligera consideracion llevados de la fuerza que la pasion de las composiciones pro pias suele tener en' los autores della. Para lo cual. Puedo alegar de mi parte la inclinacion que á la poesia. Siempre he tenido, y la edad que habiendo apenas salido de los limites de la juventud, parece que da licencia á semejantes ocupaciones demas de que no puede negarse que los estudios de esta fa cultad (en el pasado tiempo con razon tan estimada) traen consigo mas que medianos provechos como son enriquecer el poeta considerando su propia lengua, y enseñorearse del artificio dela elocuencia que en ella cabo para empresas mas altas y de mayor importancia y abrir camino para que á su imitacion los ánimos estrechos que enla brevedad del lenguaje antiguo quieren que se acabe la abundancia de la lengua cas tellana, entiendan que tiene campo abierto fácil y espacioso, por el cual con facilidad y dulzura, con gravedad y elocuencia.
