The design and functioning of an information system improve to the extent that the system can handle the questions people ask. Surprisingly, however, researchers in the cognitive, computer, and information sciences have not thoroughly examined the multitude of relationships between information systems and questions -- both question asking and answering. The purpose of this book is to explicitly examine these relationships. These post-proceedings contain the revised versions of the papers presented at the \Symposium on Objects and Databases" which was held in Sophia-Antipolis, France, June 13, 2000, in conjunction with the Fourteenth European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, ECOOP 2000. This event continued the t- dition established the year before in Lisbon (Portugal) with the First Workshop on Object-Oriented Databases. The goal of the symposium was to bring together researchers working in various corners of the eld of objects and databases, to discuss the current state of research in the eld and to critically evaluate existing solutions in terms of their current usage, their successes and limitations, and their potential for new applications. The organizing committee received 21 papers which were reviewed by a p- gram committee of people active in the eld of objects and databases. There were 3 reviews for each paper, and nally the organizing committee selected 9 long papers, 2 short papers, and a demonstration to be presented and discussed at the symposium. The selected papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including data modeling concepts, persistent object languages, consistency and integrity of persistent data, storage structures, class versioning and schema evolution, query languages, and temporal object-oriented databases. In addition to the regular papers, the symposium included an invited p- sentation, given by Prof. Malcolm Atkinson from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) where he heads the Persistence and Distribution Group.

"Intuition" has perhaps been the least understood and the most abused term in philosophy. It is often the term used when one has no plausible explanation for the source of a given belief or opinion. According to some sceptics, it is understood only in terms of what it is not, and it is not any of the better understood means for acquiring knowledge. In mathematics the term has also unfortunately been used in this way. Thus, intuition is sometimes portrayed as if it were the Third Eye, something only mathematical "mystics", like Ramanujan, possess. In mathematics the notion has also been used in a host of other senses: by "intuitive" one might mean informal, or non-rigourous, or visual, or holistic, or incomplete, or perhaps even convincing in spite of lack of proof. My aim in this book is to sweep all of this aside, to argue that there is a perfectly coherent, philosophically respectable notion of mathematical intuition according to which intuition is a condition necessary for mathemati cal knowledge. I shall argue that mathematical intuition is not any special or mysterious kind of faculty, and that it is possible to make progress in the philosophical analysis of this notion. This kind of undertaking has a precedent in the philosophy of Kant. While I shall be mostly developing ideas about intuition due to Edmund Husser! there will be a kind of Kantian argument underlying the entire book.

Challenging traditional interpretations, she argues that Proust's magnum opus is not a melancholic text, but one that records the dynamic time of change and the complex vitality of the real. Situating Proust's novel within a modernism of money, and broadening the exploration through references to cultural events and visual technologies (commercial photography, photojournalism, pornography, the regulation of prostitution, the Panama Scandal, and the Dreyfus Affair), this study reveals that Proust's subject is not the esthetic recuperation of loss but rather the adventure of living in time, on both the individual and the social level, at a concrete historical moment.
