Book Description
We report progress in our ongoing effort to compute and understand the three-dimensional instabilities (resonance) of open cavity flows from incompressible to supersonic speeds. In particular, our work is aimed at regimes where significant interactions occur between the shear layer spanning the cavity and the recirculating flow within the cavity, as encountered in many experiments and numerical simulations reported in the literature. Complementary methodologies for extracting information about global instabilities (including their receptivity and optimal control) of two- and three-dimensional cavity flows have been developed. We present here some sample calculations that show that for a low Mach number cavity with a length-to-depth ratio of two, the two-dimensional steady flow is unstable to three-dimensional (spanwise homogeneous) disturbances that consist of spanwise modulation of the recirculating vortex interior to the cavity. The oscillations are unstable over a narrow band of spanwise wavelengths comparable to the cavity depth. They are oscillatory in time, but with a very slow frequency that is about ten times slower than the incipient two-dimensional Rossiter instability. Instability seems to be related to cellular patterns observed in surface streamline patterns on cavity bottoms in some previous experiments.

Book Description
Instabilities of fluid flows and the associated transitions between different possible flow states provide a fascinating set of problems that have attracted researchers for over a hundred years. This book addresses state-of-the-art developments in numerical techniques for computational modelling of fluid instabilities and related bifurcation structures, as well as providing comprehensive reviews of recently solved challenging problems in the field.

Book Description
It is a truism that turbulence is an unsolved problem, whether in scientific, engin eering or geophysical terms. It is strange that this remains largely the case even though we now know how to solve directly, with the help of sufficiently large and powerful computers, accurate approximations to the equations that govern tur bulent flows. The problem lies not with our numerical approximations but with the size of the computational task and the complexity of the solutions we gen erate, which match the complexity of real turbulence precisely in so far as the computations mimic the real flows. The fact that we can now solve some turbu lence in this limited sense is nevertheless an enormous step towards the goal of full understanding. Direct and large-eddy simulations are these numerical solutions of turbulence. They reproduce with remarkable fidelity the statistical, structural and dynamical properties of physical turbulent and transitional flows, though since the simula tions are necessarily time-dependent and three-dimensional they demand the most advanced computer resources at our disposal. The numerical techniques vary from accurate spectral methods and high-order finite differences to simple finite-volume algorithms derived on the principle of embedding fundamental conservation prop erties in the numerical operations. Genuine direct simulations resolve all the fluid motions fully, and require the highest practical accuracy in their numerical and temporal discretisation. Such simulations have the virtue of great fidelity when carried out carefully, and repre sent a most powerful tool for investigating the processes of transition to turbulence.

Book Description
The decision of the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics to organize a Symposium on Dynamics of Slender Vortices was greeted with great enthusiasm. The acceptance of the proposal, forwarded by the Deutsches Komitee fiir Mechanik (DEKOMECH) signalized, that there was a need for discussing the topic chosen in the frame the IUTAM Symposia offer. Also the location of the symposium was suitably chosen: It was decided to hold the symposium at the RWTH Aachen, where, years ago, Theodore von Karman had worked on problems related to those to be discussed now anew. It was clear from the beginning of the planning, that the symposium could only be held in the von Karman-Auditorium ofthe Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule Aachen, a building named after him. The symposium was jointly organized by the editors of this volume, strongly supported by the local organizing committee. The invitations of the scientific committee brought together scientists actively engaged in research on the dynamics of slender vortices. It was the aim of the committee to have the state of the art summarized and also to have the latest results of specific problems investigated communicated to the participants of the symposium. The topics chosen were asymptotic theories, numerical methods, vor tices in shear layers, interaction of vortices, vortex breakdown, vortex sound, and aircraft and helicopter vortices.

Book Description
The thesis sheds light on the onset of three-dimensionality in the wake of infinite cylindrical bodies. The first part of thesis consists in an investigation of the wake of a straight infinite circular cylinder by 3D simulations. It shows that the subcriticality of the bifurcation giving rise to the onset of three-dimensionality triggers very strong non-linear effects limiting considerably the relevance of the linear theory. The flow dynamics is shown to be chaotic and to contain very large spanwise scale that must be taken into account to reproduce reliably experimental observations. The obtained numerical results set the subcritical bi-stability interval down to the Reynolds number of 170 and show that the well-known modes A and B co-exist in all regimes since the very onset of the three-dimensionality. The method of investigation of the cylinder wake is further applied to a NACA0012 airfoil with variable angle of incidence. The onset of three-dimensionality is investigated for angles of incidence from 8 to 12 degrees. The corresponding bifurcation is supercritical. The obtained spanwise scales might be of use in designing efficient direct numerical simulations.
