A Hamiltonian model for the radial and translational dynamics of clusters of coupled bubbles in an incompressible liquid developed by Ilinskii, Hamilton, and Zabolotskaya [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, 786-795 (2007)] is extended to included the effects of compressibility in the host liquid. The bubbles are assumed to remain spherical and translation is allowed. The two principal effects of liquid compressibility are time delay in bubble interaction due to the finite sound speed and radiation damping due to energy lost to acoustic radiation. The incorporation of time delays produces a system of delay differential equations of motion instead of the system of ordinary differential equations in models of bubble interaction in an incompressible medium. The form of the Hamiltonian equations of motion is significantly different from the commonly used models based on Rayleigh-Plesset equations for coupled bubble dynamics, and it provides certain advantages in numerical integration of the time-delayed equations of motion. Corrections for radiation damping in clusters of interacting bubbles are developed in the form of a time-delayed expression for bubble self-action following the method of Ilinskii and Zabolotskaya [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 92, 2837-2841 (1992)]. A set of approximate series expansions of this delayed expression is calculated to first order in the ratio of bubble radius to the characteristic wavelength of acoustic radiation from the bubble, and to varying orders in the ratio of bubble radius to characteristic bubble separation distance. Stability of the delay differential equations of motion is analyzed with four successive levels of approximation for the effects of radiation damping and time delay. The stability is analyzed with and without the effects of viscous and thermal damping. The effect of time delay and radiation damping on the pressure radiated by small systems of bubbles is considered. An approximate method to account for the delays in bubble interaction in a weakly compressible liquid is presented. This method converts the system of delay differential equations into an approximate system of ordinary differential equations, which may simplify numerical integration. Several sets of model equations incorporating propagation time delay in bubble interactions are solved numerically with existing algorithms specialized for delay differential equations. Numerical simulations of the dynamics of single bubbles, pairs of bubbles, and clusters of bubbles are used to compare the different levels of approximation for compressibility effects for low- and high-amplitude radial motion in systems of bubbles under free response and pulsed excitation by an external pressure source.

We are pleased to present the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics held at the University of Sydney, Australia, from July 15 to 19, 2002. The conference was a productive meeting of scientists, mathematicians and engineers involved in the computation of fluid flow. Keynote lectures were presented in the areas of optimisation, algorithms, turbulence and bio-fluid mechanics. Two hundred and fifty abstracts from many countries were received for con sideration. The executive committee, consisting of A. Lerat, M. Napolitano, J.J. Chattot, N. Satofuka and myself, were responsible for the selection of papers. Each of the members had a separate subcommittee to carry out the evaluation. One hundred and seventy papers were selected of which one hundred and fifty two were presented at the conference. All papers that appear in the proceedings have been peer reviewed by a panel of experts (with a minimum of two for every paper) before publication. The conference was attended by 160 delegates with a minimum of late with drawals. The informal and friendly atmosphere provided by the university sur roundings was highly appreciated, and the technical aspects of the conference were stimulating. It is appropriate here to thank Alain Lerat, the retiring secretary of the international scientific committee of the conference. We also wish to welcome J. J. Chattot who is the incoming secretary.

Many significant achievements in new ultrasound technologies to measure bone and models to elucidate the interaction and the propagation of ultrasonic waves in complex bone structures have been reported over the past ten years. Impaired bone remodeling affects not only the trabecular compartment but also the cortical one. Despite the crucial contribution of the cortical structure to the whole bone mechanical competence, cortical bone was understudied for a long time. A paradigm shift occurred around 2010, with a special focus placed on the importance of cortical bone. This has sparkled a great deal of interest in new ultrasound techniques to assess cortical bone. While our book ‘Bone Quantitative Ultrasound’ published in 2011 emphasized techniques to measure trabecular bone, this new book is devoted for a large part to the technologies introduced recently to measure cortical bone. These include resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, guided waves, scattering, and pulse-echo and tomography imaging techniques. Instrumentation, signal processing techniques and models used are detailed. Importantly, the data accumulated in recent years such as anisotropic stiffness, elastic engineering moduli, compression and shear wave speeds of cortical bones from various skeletal sites are presented comprehensively. A few chapters deal with the recent developments achieved in quantitative ultrasound of trabecular bone. These include (i) scattering-based approaches and their application to measure skeletal sites such as the spine and proximal femur and (ii) approaches exploiting the poro-elastic nature of bone. While bone fragility and osteoporosis are still the main motivation for developing bone QUS, this Book also includes chapters reporting ultrasound techniques developed for other applications of high interest such as 3-D imaging of the spine, assessment of implant stability and transcranial brain imaging. This book, together with the book ‘Bone Quantitative Ultrasound’ published in 2011 will provide a comprehensive overview of the methods and principles used in bone quantitative ultrasound and will be a benchmark for all novice or experienced researchers in the field. The book will offer recent experimental results and theoretical concepts developed so far and would be intended for researchers, graduate or undergraduate students, engineers, and clinicians who are involved in the field.
