A channeled model with a fine resolution nested grid is used to study the flow over a mountain range. The basic primitive equation model is frictionless and adiabatic, with no vertical shear. The nesting is accomplished using a scheme C staggered grid arrangement. The solutions are obtained for three categories: (a) coarse mesh solution, (b) uniform fine mesh solution, and (c) nested solution. Comparisons are made between solutions first with no mountain present, then with a mountain. During the early stages of the integration, the nested grid solution is improved over the coarse mesh solution. Difficulties arise at the boundaries, through, in both the coarse and fine meshes. Detailed discussions relating to these problems are presented, with suggestions on alternative boundary conditions. (Author).

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

The validity of linear smoothing of topography for numerical weather prediction and the variation of mountain drag with mountain height and static stability are examined in the study. In the model a constant geostrophic current is perpendicular to the mountain range and the height of the mountain is independent of y. The hydrostatic Boussinesq equations are used with motion bounded at the top by a rigid plane at z = D.A modified coordinate system similar to Phillips' sigma system was used. Solutions were obtained using a smoothed mountain profile. These solutions were compared with smoothed solutions obtained from the unsmoothed mountain. The comparison of these solutions shows that an error is introduced when non-linear terms become sufficiently large. Values of the mountain drag for differing values of mountain height at a given static stability and for differing values of static stability at a given mountain height were computed. Mountain drag was found to vary quadratically with mountain height and linearly with static stability. (Author).

A hydrostatic primitive equation meteorological model has been adapted to the small end of mesoscale and applied to two cases of wintertime flow in southern Wyoming. Emphasis has been placed on simulation of orographic, and low-level thermal and frictional forcing processes that modify the larger synoptic scale flow. The experiments considered two scales of mesoscale forcing in three-dimensional domains: (1) the 200-250 km scale in which mountain ranges withing the Rocky Mountain region can be resolved, and (2) the 30-40 km scale in which localized flow about a particular terrain feature can be simulated. The model produced reasonable simulations on both domain scales that are in general agreement with standard theories of orographic and thermally forced flows. Most significantly, comparison of numerical solutions with aircraft observations in the domain revealed that the model produced detailed and accurate results in realistic, complex situations. The considerable skill demonstrated by the model on the small end of the mesoscale indicates important applications are possible. Such a numerical model may be highly useful in providing guidance for such tasks as power plant sight studies, wind energy prospecting, and wintertime precipitation enhancement programs.
