Book Description
The absence of common software platforms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) mission planning and analysis is an ongoing impediment to collaborative work between research institutions, their partners, and end users, This thesis details the design and implementation of a distributable application to facilitate AUV mission planning and analysis. Java-based open-source libraries and a component-based framework provide diverse functionalities. The extensible Markup Language (XML) is used for data storage and message exchange, Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics for visualization and XML Schema-based Binary Compression (XSBC) for data compression. The AUV Workbench provides an intuitive cross-platform-capable tool with extensibility to provide for future enhancements such as agent-based control, asynchronous reporting and communication, loss-free message compression and built-in support for mission data archiving. This thesis also investigates the Jabber instant messaging protocol, showing its suitability for text and file messaging in a tactical environment. Exemplars show that the XML backbone of this open-source technology can be leveraged to enable both human and agent messaging with improvements over current systems. Integrated Jabber instant messaging support makes the NPS AUV Workbench the first custom application supporting XML Tactical Chat (XTC).

Book Description
The prolific deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across different fields has introduced novel challenges for AI developers and researchers. AI is permeating decision making for the masses, and its applications range from self-driving automobiles to financial loan approvals. With AI making decisions that have ethical implications, responsibilities are now being pushed to AI designers who may be far-removed from how, where, and when these ethical decisions occur. Trolley Crash: Approaching Key Metrics for Ethical AI Practitioners, Researchers, and Policy Makers provides audiences with a catalogue of perspectives and methodologies from the latest research in ethical computing. This work integrates philosophical and computational approaches into a unified framework for ethical reasoning in the current AI landscape, specifically focusing on approaches for developing metrics. Written for AI researchers, ethicists, computer scientists, software engineers, operations researchers, and autonomous systems designers and developers, Trolley Crash will be a welcome reference for those who wish to better understand metrics for ethical reasoning in autonomous systems and related computational applications. - Presents a comparison between human oversight and ethical simulation in robots - Introduces approaches for measuring, evaluating, and auditing ethical AI - Investigates how AI and technology are changing human behavior

Book Description
This book represents the results of cross-fertilization between OR/MS and CS/AI. It is this interface of OR/CS that makes possible advances that could not have been achieved in isolation. Taken collectively, these articles are indicative of the state-of-the-art in the interface between OR/MS and CS/AI and of the high caliber of research being conducted by members of the INFORMS Computing Society.

Book Description
In the early days of the Web a need was recognized for a language to display 3D objects through a browser. An HTML-like language, VRML, was proposed in 1994 and became the standard for describing interactive 3D objects and worlds on the Web. 3D Web courses were started, several best-selling books were published, and VRML continues to be used today. However VRML, because it was based on HTML, is a stodgy language that is not easy to incorporate with other applications and has been difficult to add features to. Meanwhile, applications for interactive 3D graphics have been exploding in areas such as medicine, science, industry, and entertainment. There is a strong need for a set of modern Web-based technologies, applied within a standard extensible framework, to enable a new generation of modeling & simulation applications to emerge, develop, and interoperate. X3D is the next generation open standard for 3D on the web. It is the result of several years of development by the Web 3D Consortium's X3D Task Group. Instead of a large monolithic specification (like VRML), which requires full adoption for compliance, X3D is a component-based architecture that can support applications ranging from a simple non-interactive animation to the latest streaming or rendering applications. X3D replaces VRML, but also provides compatibility with existing VRML content and browsers. Don Brutzman organized the first symposium on VRML and is playing a similar role with X3D; he is a founding member of the consortium. Len Daly is a professional member of the consortium and both Len and Don have been involved with the development of the standard from the start. - The first book on the new way to present interactive 3D content over the Web, written by two of the designers of the standard - Plentiful illustrations and screen shots in the full color text - Companion website with extensive content, including the X3D specification, sample code and applications, content creation tools, and demos of compatible Web browsers

Book Description
Underwater Acoustic Modeling and Simulation, Fourth Edition continues to provide the most authoritative overview of currently available propagation, noise, reverberation, and sonar-performance models. This fourth edition of a bestseller discusses the fundamental processes involved in simulating the performance of underwater acoustic systems and emphasizes the importance of applying the proper modeling resources to simulate the behavior of sound in virtual ocean environments. New to the Fourth Edition Extensive new material that addresses recent advances in inverse techniques and marine-mammal protection Problem sets in each chapter Updated and expanded inventories of available models Designed for readers with an understanding of underwater acoustics but who are unfamiliar with the various aspects of modeling, the book includes sufficient mathematical derivations to demonstrate model formulations and provides guidelines for selecting and using the models. Examples of each type of model illustrate model formulations, model assumptions, and algorithm efficiency. Simulation case studies are also included to demonstrate practical applications. Providing a thorough source of information on modeling resources, this book examines the translation of our physical understanding of sound in the sea into mathematical models that simulate acoustic propagation, noise, and reverberation in the ocean. The text shows how these models are used to predict and diagnose the performance of complex sonar systems operating in the undersea environment.
