Book Description
Depression is a serious problem. Serious problems often need a complex solution. In her description of novel approaches to treating depression, Dr Radenković is summarising her results from the beginning of her scientific endeavour. As an engineer of electronics with a strong background in theoretical physics, biophysicist and neuroscientist, she aims at filling in the gap between disciplines needed to bring the innovation in the treatment of depression. Starting from the history of electrical and magnetic stimulation important for this field, she is combining the knowledge from biophysics and electromagnetic to explain how both modalities of stimulation can affect our neural tissue. Reviewing the most essential concepts in physiological complexity, she illustrates all the relevant research in different attempts to understand how we can detect the very subtle changes characteristic for a disorder. Those can be recognised from several electrical signals recorded from the body (electrophysiological signals). Fractal and nonlinear measures are in use for several decades, but are still not widely utilized in clinical practice due to deeply rooted obsolete mathematical models originated from the 19th century. Connecting the powerful models from machine learning (data mining) with measures of complexity and irregularity, Dr Radenković demonstrates how their synergy can bring innovative solutions in psychiatry. She tackles crucial questions like "Should scientific research in psychiatry go online?" One of the central questions she is trying to answer is why two modalities of electromagnetic stimulation-rTMS and tDCS- are effective in treatments of depression. A combination of fractal and nonlinear analysis and a well-performed machine learning can become a useful addition to present practice: decision support solution. We can consider it a test which is accessible, easy to use and cost-effective in comparison to many other methodologies tested in contemporary scientific literature. The question is, how long it takes that something scientifically proven translates to clinical practice. Remember how long it took for all doctors to start washing their hands. We can only hope this translation would be faster. Many people need that badly.

Book Description
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious, debilitating, life-shortening illness that affects many persons of all ages and backgrounds. The lifetime risk for MDD is 7-12% for men and 20-25% for women (Kessler et al., 2003). MDD is a disabling disorder that costs the U.S. over $200 billion per year in direct and indirect costs (Greenberg et al., 2015), and is the leading cause of disability worldwide (WHO, 2018). Depression also has detrimental effects on all aspects of social functioning (e.g., self-care, social role, and family life, including household, marital, kinship, and parental roles). While there have been several treatments that are efficacious, many individuals suffering from depression experience life-long challenges due to the chronic and episodic nature of the disease. Identifying strategies to find the right treatments for the right patients is critical. Ongoing research has explored the importance of examining physiologic biomarkers, as well as clinical characteristics to gain a better understanding of subtypes of depression, which will lead to improved treatments and better outcomes. This book provides an introduction to the etiology and pathophysiology of depression, common comorbidities and differential diagnoses, pharmacotherapy strategies, psychotherapeutic and neuromodulation interventions, novel and non-traditional treatment strategies, and considerations in special populations.

Book Description
The use of behavioral and cognitive techniques for treating depression has yielded exciting results. Research studies throughout the world have found that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is as effective in the short term as anti-depressant drugs and has longer-lasting effects than medication. The Psychological Treatment of Depressiondescribes the wide range of cognitive behavioral techniques in great detail, enabling practitioners new to CBT to feel confident using them and those already using CBT to update their skills. Since the publication of the first edition in 1984, which sold nearly 20,000 copies, extensive research has continued to be conducted on the outcome of cognitive therapy. In this second edition, the author discusses these recent advances and theories, and provides details of new techniques to use in an in-patient setting. He has also added an introductory chapter for readers who may be less familiar with issues relating to depression. Basic and clear, the textcontains explicit case studies, sample dialogues, checklists, and other helpful aids. The book is a highly effective working manual--a field guide for all mental health practitioners in any discipline who want to incorporate the successful methods of CBT into their work with depressed patients.
