Physiographically, the mountains of North Carolina are included in the Blue Ridge division of the Southern Appalachians. In Virginia the Blue Ridge is narrow, but in North Carolina it widens out to form a high plateau, broken by mountain masses and river basins, extending from.the Piedmont of North Carolina on the east to Tennessee on the west. The east ern edge is bounded by an irregular chain of mountains known as the Blue Ridge, which extends across the state from northeast to southwest. Viewed from the Piedmont this chain presents a steep and rugged escarpment to feet high. The plateau is enclosed on the west by the Iron, Great Smoky, and Unaka Mountains, which form the boundary between North Carolina and Tennessee.
