Book Description
Barbara Jean Evans has followed her father as his "son" practically since she was born on their patch of rock, swamp and bush in the northern wilderness. Bobbi's first experiences of womanhood become mixed up with her own desire to become a blacksmith. Consequently, she promises to marry a man she barely knows so she can join him in training under Tim, a completely unknown Irish blacksmith, who has other plans for her. She meets a native Indian healer, Lorna, who encourages her to break barriers and earn a job as a teamster in a logging camp - as a young man. Soon Bobbi feels she no longer needs to hide under a cover of deception and is accepted for what she is -- a very strong and capable young woman. She is certain that one day women will work right alongside men in any job they choose. Along the way, Bobbi meets a native Algonkian man, Jonathan Swift, who has been wrestling with his mixed white/Indian heritage. They discuss the north and how it is changing and what it has meant for Jon's people. While wrestling with the challenges of working as a blacksmith, working in a logging camp, and being an eligible female in a world with many more men than women, Bobbi and Jon adventure together going on canoe trips and horse treks through the mostly pristine wilderness. Through trial and error, they find their way to a new life together.

Book Description
Once Upon a Northern Night has received starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal. In this exquisite lullaby, the beauty and wonder of a northern winter night unfold, with images of a soft snowfall, the wild animals that appear in the garden, the twinkling stars, the gentle rhythm of the northern lights and the etchings of frost on the window pane. As the young child sleeps, wrapped in a downy blanket, a snowflake falls, and then another and another. The poem describes the forest of snow-covered pines, where a deer and fawn nibble a frozen apple, and a great gray owl swoops down with its feathers trailing through the snow. Two snowshoe hares scamper and play under the watchful eyes of a little fox, and a tiny mouse scurries in search of a midnight feast. When the snow clouds disappear, stars light up the sky, followed by the mystical shimmering of northern lights - all framed by the frost on the window. Jean E. Pendziwol's lyrical poem reflects a deep appreciation of the magic of a northern winter night where, even as a child slumbers, the world outside does not rest but continues its own natural rhythms. Isabelle Arsenault's spare, beautifully rendered illustrations, with their subtle but striking use of color, make us feel that we too are experiencing the enchantment of that northern night. They simultaneously evoke winter's nighttime life and the cozy warmth and security of a beloved child's sleep.

The Captain's Bride Leaving their home in Norway behind, Elsa and Peder Ramstad embark on a new life in with their closest friends, including: Kaatje Jansen, a woman seeking a new beginning for the sake of her marriage and for the child growing within her; Elsa's sister Tora, a sly young vixen who knows exactly what she wants--and exactly how to get it; and Karl Martensen, a man torn between his friendship for Peder and a forbidden, secret love for Elsa. Experience an epic saga of perseverance and passion, faith, and fidelity. Deep Harbor Determined to live "the good life," no matter the price, Tora Anders weaves a web of lies that could cost her everything she cares for-including a successful future and the man she loves. Her sister, Elsa Ramstad, has everything her heart desires: a loving husband, a family she adores, and a fulfilling life at sea. Then tragedy strikes. Now, drawing upon her faith and all the strength she can muster, Elsa must once again discover the woman she is and who she chooses to be. Four years after her husband's disappearance, Kaatje Janssen struggles to raise two young daughters and tend her farm. But when help comes from the most unlikely source, Kaatje faces both uncertainty about the future and a deep secret from her past. And after years of grappling with his feelings for Elsa and the mistakes he has made, Karl is caught in a life of loneliness and emptiness. Can he finally accept the reality of what he once lost and open himself up to the possibility of what could be? Separated by physical distance and emotional boundaries, these four bound by friendship and family find each other once again and discover that some ties can never be broken in Deep Harbor. Midnight Sun Desperate to know if her missing husband still lives, Kaatje Janssen hires the rugged, yet tenderhearted, James Walker to guide her through the perils of the Alaskan wilderness. What she finally discovers, however, is far from what she expected...and could well place her in the greatest danger of her life. As captain of the Majestic and mother of Kristian and Eve, Elsa Ramstad has sought to ease the ache of her lonely heart. But when an old friend rekindles the spark of romance within her, will she allow the flames of love to burn again? Her foolish youth behind her, Tora Anders looks forward to her wedding and a fresh start in life as the wife of her beloved, Trent Storm. But first she must confront, face-to-face, the terrible demons of her past--and her struggle to forgive the man who radically altered her future. Though widely admired, Captain Karl Martensen feels no depth of emotion for any of the women with whom his life becomes uncomfortably entangled. He has only tender memories of the love he once lost--a love who, by the grace of God, he may just find again. Witness the glorious conclusion of The Northern Lights Trilogy as four bound by friendship journey out of the shadow of their darkest days into the bright future awaiting them in the land of the Midnight Sun.

Book Description
From Nansen's Introduction This book owes its existence in the first instance to a rash promise made some years ago to my friend Dr. J. Scott Keltie, of London, that I would try, when time permitted, to contribute a volume on the history of arctic voyages to his series of books on geographical exploration. The subject was an attractive one; I thought I was fairly familiar with it, and did not expect the book to take a very long time when once I made a start with it. On account of other studies it was a long while before I could do this; but when at last I seriously took the work in hand, the subject in return monopolised my whole powers. It appeared to me that the natural foundation for a history of arctic voyages was in the first place to make clear the main features in the development of knowledge of the North in early times. By tracing how ideas of the Northern World, appearing first in a dim twilight, change from age to age, how the old myths and creations of the imagination are constantly recurring, sometimes in new shapes, and how new ones are added to them, we have a curious insight into the working of the human mind in its endeavour to subject to itself the world and the universe. A word from this editor: This book can hardly compare to getting the original hardback which by now is a rare book - the wealth of maps and illustrations Nansen placed in his 2 volume work covers a breath of history and makes for a wonderful printed work of timeless value - the poor substitutes we have placed here attempt to touch on this but if you can find the original you should get it.
