Excerpt from Normal Exponent, 1901, Vol. 13 Exerting itself to the full to push by the monsters before them. Scylla on one side, upholding a register tight in her left hand. Ink Of a crimson hue dripped from the pen in her right hand; Stern was her face and demeanor, dreadful her eyes in their sternness. Low sank the hearts of the Seniors, even the hearts of these brave ones. There on the right glared Charybdis, even more fearful than Scylla: Criticism the motto that was printed plain on her forehead. Book Description
Excerpt from The Purple and Gold, 1902, Vol. 20 The committee made a very careful investigation of the conditions at Middletown. Conn.. And found that Alpha Alpha was the only fraternity there which claimed to maintain a small. Select chapter. Most of the other fraternities have large chapter houses and require a large number of undergraduates to pay expenses and maintain their houses. The last Wes leyan Olla Podrz'da shows a total of 267 undergraduates, including special students. Of these, 226 are in the seven secret societies, fifteen in Chi Psi. And 211 in the other fraternities, or an average of thirty-five for each fraternity. The committee believed that this was entirely out of proportion to the available fraternity material in Wesleyan, and that it would be impossible to maintain a satisfactory Alpha there unless it was limited in number to fifteen or twenty members. If the fraternity material is not large in a class. Each frater nity can obtain a very few good men from such a class. And must make up its delegation of ten or twelve from material which really should not be taken into any of the better fraternities. Therefore, the poor material is likely to predominate and the tendency is downward instead of upward. For a larger number of poor men are more likely to drag down the smaller number of good men than the latter are to materially raise the standard of the former. Book Description
This text emphasizes rigorous mathematical techniques for the analysis of boundary value problems for ODEs arising in applications. The emphasis is on proving existence of solutions, but there is also a substantial chapter on uniqueness and multiplicity questions and several chapters which deal with the asymptotic behavior of solutions with respect to either the independent variable or some parameter. These equations may give special solutions of important PDEs, such as steady state or traveling wave solutions. Often two, or even three, approaches to the same problem are described. The advantages and disadvantages of different methods are discussed. The book gives complete classical proofs, while also emphasizing the importance of modern methods, especially when extensions to infinite dimensional settings are needed. There are some new results as well as new and improved proofs of known theorems. The final chapter presents three unsolved problems which have received much attention over the years. Both graduate students and more experienced researchers will be interested in the power of classical methods for problems which have also been studied with more abstract techniques. The presentation should be more accessible to mathematically inclined researchers from other areas of science and engineering than most graduate texts in mathematics.

Book Description
Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
