A novel method for efficient high-accuracy satellite attitude estimation is presented to address the increasing performance requirements of resource-constrained small satellites. Symplectic numerical methods are applied to the nonlinear estimation problem for Hamiltonian systems, leading to a new general solution that exactly preserves state probability density functions and conserves invariant properties of the dynamics when solving for the state estimate. This nonlinear Symplectic Filter is applied to a standard small satellite mission and simulation results demonstrate orders of magnitude improvement in state and constants of motion estimation when compared to extended and iterative Kalman methods particularly in the presence of nonlinear dynamics and high accuracy attitude observations. Based on numerous simulations, the authors conclude that this new method shows promise for improved attitude estimation onboard high performance, resource-constrained small satellites.

A flexible, robust attitude determination and control (ADC) system is presented for small satellite platforms. Using commercial-off-the-shelf sensors, reaction wheels, and magnetorquers which fit within the 3U CubeSat form factor, the system delivers arc-minute pointing precision. The ADC system includes a multiplicative extended Kalman filter for attitude determination and a slew rate controller that acquires a view of the Sun for navigation purposes. A pointing system is developed that includes a choice of two pointing controllers -- a proportional derivative controller and a nonlinear sliding mode controller. This system can reorient the spacecraft to satisfy a variety of mission objectives, but it does not enforce attitude constraints. A constrained attitude guidance system that can enforce an arbitrary set of attitude constraints is then proposed as an improvement upon the unconstrained pointing system. The momentum stored by the reaction wheels is managed using magnetorquers to prevent wheel saturation. The system was thoroughly tested in realistic software- and hardware-in-the-loop simulations that included environmental disturbances, parameter uncertainty, actuator dynamics, and sensor bias and noise.

This thesis explores the attitude estimation and control problem of a magnetically controlled small satellite in initial acquisition phase. During this phase, large data uncertainties pose estimation challenges, while highly nonlinear dynamics and inherent limitations of the magnetic actuation are primary issues in control. We aim to design algorithms, which can improve performance compared to the state of the art techniques and remain tractable for practical applications. Static attitude estimation, which is an essential part of a satellite control system, uses vector information and solves a constrained weighted least-square problem. With large data uncertainties, this technique results in large errors rendering divergence or infeasibility in dynamic filtering and control. When static estimation is the primary source of attitude, these errors become critical; for example in low budget small satellites. To address this issue, we formulate a robust static estimation problem with norm-bounded uncertainties, which is a difficult optimization problem due to its unfavorable convexity properties and nonlinear constraints. By deriving an analytical upper bound for the convex maximization, the robust min-max problem is approximated with a minimization problem with quadratic cost and constraints (a QCQP), which is non-convex. Semidefinite relaxation is used to upper bound the non-convex QCQP with a semi-definite program, which can efficiently be solved in a polynomial time. Furthermore, it is shown that the derived upper bound has no gap in solving the robust problem in practice. Semi-definite relaxations are also applied to solve the robust formulations of a more general class of problems known as the orthogonal Procrustes problem (OPP). It is shown that the solution of the relaxed OPP is exact when no uncertainties are considered; however, for the robust case, only a sub-optimal solution can be obtained. Finally, a satellite rate damping in initial acquisition phase is addressed by using nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). Standard NMPC schemes with guaranteed stability show superior performance than existing techniques; however, they are computationally expensive. With large initial rates, the computational burden of NMPC becomes prohibitively excessive. For these cases, an algorithm is presented with an additional constraint on the cost reduction that allows an early termination of the optimizer based on the available computational resources. The presented algorithm significantly reduces the de-tumbling time due to the imposed cost reduction constraint.

This book discusses all spacecraft attitude control-related topics: spacecraft (including attitude measurements, actuator, and disturbance torques), modeling, spacecraft attitude determination and estimation, and spacecraft attitude controls. Unlike other books addressing these topics, this book focuses on quaternion-based methods because of its many merits. The book lays a brief, but necessary background on rotation sequence representations and frequently used reference frames that form the foundation of spacecraft attitude description. It then discusses the fundamentals of attitude determination using vector measurements, various efficient (including very recently developed) attitude determination algorithms, and the instruments and methods of popular vector measurements. With available attitude measurements, attitude control designs for inertial point and nadir pointing are presented in terms of required torques which are independent of actuators in use. Given the required control torques, some actuators are not able to generate the accurate control torques, therefore, spacecraft attitude control design methods with achievable torques for these actuators (for example, magnetic torque bars and control moment gyros) are provided. Some rigorous controllability results are provided. The book also includes attitude control in some special maneuvers, such as orbital-raising, docking and rendezvous, that are normally not discussed in similar books. Almost all design methods are based on state-spaced modern control approaches, such as linear quadratic optimal control, robust pole assignment control, model predictive control, and gain scheduling control. Applications of these methods to spacecraft attitude control problems are provided. Appendices are provided for readers who are not familiar with these topics.

An embedded system for GPS-based attitude determination (AD) using signal-to-noise (SNR) measurements was developed for CubeSat applications. The design serves as an evaluation testbed for conducting ground based experiments using various computational methods and antenna types to determine the optimum AD accuracy. Raw GPS data is also stored to non-volatile memory for downloading and post analysis. Two low-power microcontrollers are used for processing and to display information on a graphic screen for real-time performance evaluations. A new parallel inter-processor communication protocol was developed that is faster and uses less power than existing standard protocols. A shorted annular patch (SAP) antenna was fabricated for the initial ground-based AD experiments with the testbed. Static AD estimations with RMS errors in the range of 2.5o to 4.8o were achieved over a range of off-zenith attitudes.
